View Full Version : Tank lid sweating

Went on a trip up to Ferndale on my K75S this past weekend. When I removed the multivario bag to fill her up with gas, I noticed the gas lid was sweating and all wet with what smelled like mild gas.
I was guessing that my tank bag was cutting off the air suction.

Any ideas?

Well - you should have no suction since the tank is vented via a pipe that runs to the very top of the tank to a spigot on the bottom of the tank.

It sounds more as if you need a new set of cap seals. This isn't uncommon.. and installation isn't difficult. The tank bag was just retarding the evaporation of leaking fuel that you'd normally not notice without the tank bag on.

Most of it is very straightforwards - except popping the inner cover off the cap. You just have to do it - they don't seem to break although they look like they should.

Be very careful with the metal ring behind the floating rubber seal - the edges are razor sharp (DAMHIK.. it was painful).

You may also want to replace the cap to tank seal at the same time, these also tend to go south with age.

Before replacing the cap parts - I'd suggest removing the cap assembly from the bike (4 screws) and doing it on a clean workbench (or kitchen table) - just don't let flame get near the top of the open tank (I have sealed them with a small plastic container stuffed in the hole).

Best,

I have had the lid apart in the past and changed all the seals except the hard one you mentioned. I was afraid it would break.

Thanks so much. That was informative.
