Is there a code/ switch sequence that will turn off the lights with the engine running?

So you don't have to ask why, I'm a MSF rider coach. I'll be teaching the ERC soon and I will be using my RT to demonstrate the exercises. I'm afraid that the speed and duration of the demo will not be enough to recharge the battery.

That's why I want to reduce the load.

There is a button push sequence that you perform to turn off the lights with the engine running. I cannot find where I read that information. Check with your dealer, he might know.

Wow . . . really? A sequence of buttons to push? On my R1100RS, I just have a switch on the right handlebar that turns off all of the lights! ;)

I took the class on an RT, no problems

The bike has to be stationary. Push & hold turn signal cancel button for 4-5 seconds, release and then push & hold right turn signal button for 4-5 seconds. Turning highbeems on and off will restart the lights as will restarting the engine.

Most motorcycles sold in Europe have headlamp switches. If your dealer is willing to look for the part number, he can order you one. I've recieved two headlamp switches for K100's over the years, right out of the parts book. I have a HL switch on a Yamaha that I own, you just have to do alittle resurch.

I tryed that, It didn't do the trick. I called my dealer today and was told that sequence worked up through 2005. unfortunatly mine is an 06. They also told me not to worry about the battery recovering from the starter drain. I was told that a minute or two at 2100 rpm is enough time for the battery to recover. Thanks for the responses

Nothing to worry about. I have been an MSF coach for 16 years, and I have never had any issues with the battery not maintaining charge during any of the BRC and ERC classes I have done in everything from near freezing to blistering heat. My 94 R1100RS has front and rear running lights, and extra brake lights. I think it is a better idea to have all the lights active so the students get the real scope of the visibility of your bike. Just as we teach them to increase their visibility.

Do as we really do, not just as we say. Ride as we really ride, not just as we say to ride. Should be the motto for every MSF instructor.

As long as you have a good 1/2 hour ride at highway speeds coming into class, your battery will be plenty charged. I would do nothing with your lights other than make sure the students see them ALL working.

I've got an '06 R12RT (build date 02/06) and I can turn my headlight(s) off with the turn signal cancel/right turn signal switches. I just can't recall off the top of my head if the sequence mentioned above is what I've used, but it sounds right.

The sequence should work for an '06 as well. The more recent ZFE updates will allow the headlight to turn on with the high-beam switch.

If you find that the turn signal comes on as soon as it's depressed, it means that the turn cancel was not held long enough.

Up through mid-2003, Euro-spec BMWs had light switches. Beginning in late 2003 even the Euro-spec bikes were manufactured with "permanent lights" and no light ON-OFF switches.
