540+ mile unmarked dual sport adventurous route across the "Dairy State"
http://klasjm.smugmug.com/photos/345121498_vfqoc-XL.jpg
My friend Chad Berger ("Rokklym" on AdvRider) a few years ago had and idea to map out a route from
the Illinois / Wisconsin border to the shore of Lake Superior using gravel roads, forest roads, ATV & snowmobile trails/routes while using as little tarmac as possible to sew the trail together.
What he ended up with was a fantastic dual sport ride through the many different landscapes of the 30th state of the Union. Thanks Chad :bow

:nono Just a little disclaimer: This route is not an actual marked trail. Any ATV trails you might ride are at your own risk and you will need to be aware of the rules and regulations of those trails. The trails official name is Trans Wisconsin Adventure Trail, remember don't use the acronym in public.
Here is Chad's website: lonewolfexpeditions.com (http://www.lonewolfexpeditions.com/main.html)
Please email Chad at chad@lonewolfexpeditions.com and ask for the TWT file. The GPS file will be free, although paypal donations would be
accepted.

A one week 1,300 mile trip on TKC80 knobby tires. The trail is 120 miles from my house. I rode the whole route in July and revisited two of my favorite sections Fall of 2008.

540 miles and I have a gallery of 425 photos. Many of the photos are like these two, same location different angle and exposure. I will edit, and not post all of the photos.

Above: Potosi Point a few blocks from the Transportation Museum, Great River Road Interpretive Center, National Brewery Museum, and most importantly the famous Potosi Brewing Company.
Potosi Point, view the River from one of the longest & most narrow of peninsula located on the Upper Mississippi River.
At the river below Potosi, Potosi Station is where lead was loaded onto riverboats at the end of a narrow spit of land extending out into the Potosi Canal of the Mississippi River.

At the end of Potosi's main street, follow the gravel road under the railroad bridge and drive out to "The Point" and view the River from one of the longest & most narrow of peninsula located on the entire River.

It is a enduro route roll chart holder. It is used on most all dual sport organized rides. This chart holder is made by Moose and sells for 20 bucks. You may be able to use 2 inch adding machine paper and hand write your directions. At most D.S. events, you get a 8.5 by 11 sheet of paper and a scissors and you cut the paper in 3 strips the long way and tape it in your holder. Chad kinda styled this easy dual sport trail after the great Trans American Trail (http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/310/917/Motorcycle-Article/Riding-The-Trans-America-Trail.aspx) (well no desert or mountains included).
The TWT could be divided into sections: Stating from The southwest:
Western Upland is a rugged landscape with a mix of forest and farmland, including many bluffs and river bottoms on the Mississippi River. This region is part of the Driftless Area. This area was not covered by glaciers during the most recent ice age, the Wisconsin Glaciation. This section you could easily do on a larger bike that does gravel well.
In the middle of the Trail, is a mix of hills various farm and forest lands. The Middle of the trail has a nice "Supermoto" section at Wild Cat State Park. The trail also goes thru The "Pine Tree Farm" and this sand is a must for some type of knobby tires. This section near Sparta was all technical two track sugar sand. This pine farm is one of Chad's favorite sections. The middle of the trail also goes through Clark and Jackson County, with is one of the Midwest choice off-road areas.
The northern one third of the trail starts at Hwy 64, 14 miles west of Medford , WI. at the Perkinstown Motorized Trail. The Northern Highland has massive mixed hardwood and coniferous forests including the 1.5 million acre Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. The trail goes right through the National forest. In the far north, the Lake Superior Lowland occupies a belt of land along Lake Superior, which could include the rugged Bayfield county.

When I rode the full Trans Wisconsin Adventure Trail, I started in the middle of this trail at Neilsville and traveled north, then doubled back to the south state line. On two different October weekends, I revisited my favorite parts of the trail. I will do the report starting at my favorite part of the southern third of the trail, so you shall view Summer and Fall photos in the same location. I am sure I shall travel different parts of the trail in the future.
Cassville Car Ferry
is the only ferry operating on the Upper Mississippi from Bettendorf to St. Paul. Cassville, Wisconsin is located at Mile marker 213 Railroad miles from Chicago and 606 river miles from Cairo, Illinois as noted by signage.
No bridges span the 54 miles of river between Dubuque and Prairie du Chien, Wis.,
When you are in Cassville, stop at the Voigt's Town Pump Bar & Grill for a great lunch or breakfast.

When you are down in the southwest part of Wisconsin near Monroe, try to make the 50 mile Cheese Country Trail part of your adventure. It is a converted rails to trails and is limestone/hardpack with some dust. The trail has numerous old bridges but is pretty mild for a dual sport route. Note: At Calamine, cut off the trail to Belmont for the most scenic part of the ride. This is a fee trail route and doable on any motorcycle. Buddy and I really enjoyed this ride and we have a ride report here: Cheese Country Trail-Ride Report Linky (http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/showthread.php?t=14771&page=23)

Nelson Dewey State Park
This is the view from Nelson Dewey State Park.
The Park is named after Wisconsin’s first governor. This Park is great for camping.
The farm scene below is of Stonefield Village, a 1880 Historical site. When you are on the tw*t tour, take the ride up the Park road and enjoy the view. The Park charges a daily fee. The Ranger will waived the fee if you just use the road. The reasoning is you can drive through and not pay the fee is because the gasoline road tax paid for the roads in the State Parks. This view is taken from the road.

Meandering Rivers
Riding past meandering rivers, I have wondered why the river will not travel in a straight line, but I never asked why.:scratch Winter-Google, bingo now I know.
The natural tendency of a river flowing across flat country is to to grow more and more curvy, forming meanders or loops as it erodes the outer side of a bend and deposits sediment on the inner side.
The Trans Wisconsin meanders past many meandering rivers.

Took a wrong turn on this road along the Grant River. The road looked very interesting so I keep riding till the road dead ended into a farmers yard. I talked to the farmer for a while and I noted the cool barn/shed. He told me he was to tear the building down as it is taxes are valuated more than it's practical worth. Well that's progress.

From Soldiers Grove the Trans Wisconsin Adventure Trail puts you on arguably Wisconsin's best 5 miles of well maintained tarmac, namely Wildcat Mountain State Park and the small town of Ontario Wisconsin. This post is taken from my "Pictorial of The 30th State" thread (http://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/showthread.php?t=14771) as I already had nice photos of the ride and hey, why not take advantage of the Supermoto section of the trail and not think about using the camera.:thumb
:gerg For the non-motorcyclist visitors to this site, Supermoto, or Supermotard is a cross-over of motocross and road racing. Races are commonly held on road racing or medium sized go-kart tracks with an off-road section in the infield. The motorcycles used are combinations of off-road motorcycles and road-racing rims/tires, known as 'supermotard' bikes. Unlike the TW*T which is 80% dirt 20% tarmac, most supermoto race tracks are typically configured with approximately 70% tarmac and 30% dirt.

Thanks Steve, Unlike you riders from Texas, we have world class snow going on right now (which gives me some time to think about riding and detailing out a RR. I enjoyed your ride you did yesterday titled "Foggy Texas day" and it made me envious. More and more of my friends are enjoying Texas.
Speaking of snow, I am looking at this sandy two track and remembering that I was plenty sweaty riding my R100GS thru the powdery sand. I just poured the power on in first gear, using my front wheel like a ski and not going too fast as I could hurt myself.
North of Wildcat State Park and south of Sparta is the "Sand Farm". As I am traveling dirt, I often think of the conditions millions of years ago that created the earth in front of my front wheel. This area is miles of sand, how far I have no idea (maybe 5 miles). From Sparta south, this section would be the only part of the TW*T you would need knobby tires. You can tell by the photo, I was getting tired.
...must try to explain the fun this trail was for myself and four other :D brushpopper :D club members. In two 1/2 days of smiling we manage to conquer the TWT, enjoying some of what has to be the best trails and roads Wisconsin has to offer.
Riding three Husky 610s, a XT600, and my ride a Suzuki gs750 with Dunlop 404s (metric cruiser tire), Renthal bars,& a Kerker header. Yes that is correct a 1980 Suzuki street bike, my sanity is always in question.:evil But with solid B enduro skills and a lot of experience with all types of bikes and terrain ... we set out from Milledgeville, Illinois on Friday at 8 am. Through the early light fog our hopes of an epic ride were very high. :clap
With the first day in southern Wisconsin things were easy cruising blacktops and mostly maintained gravel or "b" roads making our way to Wildcat State Park to camp before dark. Be careful of soft blacktop across from Tiny's bar though, :banghead one Husky leaning on the 'ol XT after a quick one.:dunno The ratcoons were very aggressive at the park....
On with day two, the horse and buggie religion is thick in this area but all waved, just watch out for those "ROAD APPLES"... A light over night sprinkle kept the dust down in the morning. As the day wore on, dust was an obstacle to deal with as was more trails with sugar sand and rocky areas, along with our second closed road and ATV riders... By the end of the day I had taken terra firma samples twice with the big Suzuki :eek but still made Clam Lake campground, darn no showers.
Sunday showed us a cool sunshiny day perfect for riding except for the dust, but now being used to it and adapting to a wide spacing with waiting one rider at a time stopping to mark corners for the next rider in line all went smooth. We all hit our top speed of the trip on one very consistent surfaced long straight gravel road that begged you to twist it to the stops if you dare. At noon we were being splashed by waves of the big lake enjoying Zone bars and trail mix. Good Fun!:clap
Our adventure continued to rustic roads down the west side of the state into Minnesota. & Iowa but that's another story. My verdict FUNFUNFUN:clap :clap :clap Do I recommend any one else to ride this with street tires? no the soft sand in a few areas was incredibly challenging as was the fist plus size rocks even if is only maybe 10% of the ride. Any fear of flattening down pipes or very soft sand should be used as deciding factor for any adventure like this. Well I'm late for supper... www.geocities.com/brushpoppers (http://www.geocities.com/brushpoppers) till next time; Mad Jack

Trans Wisconsin Adventure trail
Wednesday 5-14-2008, 9:28pm:
The sounds of coyotes howling their praise over a recent kill is the only sound that breaks the silence at our campsite at Perch Lake in the Chequamegon - Nicolet national forest in Northern Wisconsin. Dave and I listen to them howl as we sit and enjoy our basic meal of Spam and Ramen noodles cooked over single burner camp stoves.
We arrived at the campground at dusk after logging in a 320 mile day of exploring a route I mapped out that crosses the entire state of Wisconsin, mainly off pavement.
Our route for the day started at my house in south central Wisconsin and our hopes were to see if this route I mapped out was worth a hoot. I know all the roads on my route that are south of my house, and most of the ones within 100 miles north, so we had the get some miles in and see what was out there.
A 30 mile pavement blast started out our day to get to more interesting riding. Logging is a big industry in some of these areas and with the late spring, lots of rain and logging traffic, some of the "roads" were in rough shape.
We both rode 650 thumpers and they proved to be great machines for this route, very capable off road and not too bad on the highways. Dave's KLR has a sweet set of Husky forks on it and Happy trails bags and my DR650 has Ortlieb bags over Happy trails racks.
After riding a big chunk of ATV trails, we hopped on some fun, fast, straight gravel roads and kept pushing North.

A friend and I set out a couple of weeks ago to hit the trail from Millston north. We changed some of the route to speed up the trip. Now we know that we are not fast enough to do the whole trail in just a three day weekend.
It was a very good weekend of riding. 1000 miles in two and a half days of road, dirt and gravel. Lots of nice people and great views of Wisconsin from a perspective few get to see.
Somewhere along the route an the eagle has landed...and got a rabbit.

This is such a great way to see all of what Wisconsin has to offer. From the winding hills of the south west to the big woods of the north and everything in between. Thanks Chad for the efforts - I had a ball!
I'm working on a return track from Cornucopia back down to hwy 70 just east of Lorreta/Drapper. I know the area well and I thought it might be cool if some riders want a little more fun on there way back south. I need to ride it one more time to make sure all the bugs are out but hope to have it ready in spring.
Cheers, Randy
... we just returned from the trail yesterday. We left Thursday afternoon. In all according to the GPS we traveled 1400 some miles from Dubuque. Great ride and also my first ever bike ride of more then a couple hundred miles.

The sand at the ATV trails around Black River Falls were only a warm up for the sand. There is more sand in Bayfield County then all the beaches of the West Coast! The last 30 miles of sand was the toughest for me and my pig (1200GS) however we made it!
Thanks for putting together such a great route!
It was 560 miles and took 2.5 days.

Jackson and Clark are The Center of Off-Road in the Midwest!
Jackson and Clark Counties’ beautiful wilderness areas have a combined 235 miles of trails open to ATVing and off-road motorcycling—100 miles in Jackson and 135 miles in Clark. The landscape’s rolling ruggedness and great natural beauty is truly unique in the Midwest. Riders will find 133,000 acres of the Clark County Forest and 335,000 acres of public forest, with hundreds of miles of designated trails in the Jackson County Forest and Black River State Forest but, the true beauty of the County and State Forest are the hunting roads that cut through the forest land. Thousands of wilderness acres just waiting to be explored.
The terms licensed motorcycle & Off road motorcycles terms can be very confusing. ATV trails running along the sides of roads, hence requiring lights and license. I have seen signs posted as not allowing off-road motorcycles, but no signage about licensed motorcycles being allowed.
Only licensed dual sport motorcycles are allowed on the ATV trails as of January 2008.

I enjoy riding Clark and Jackson County trails and roads, and 3 hours from my home it is easy to get to. If you are doing the TW*T and have a very dirt worthy motorcycle and good off-road skills, use this area as a destination. The TW*T will give you a great sample of the area roads.
Map below: When I rode TW*T route, I also rode the (west) green route of the Knobby Ridge Motorcycle Trail. I have a Street Pilot, and not a trail GPS so I just followed the Trail signs and once done with the loop I figured out where I was. Like I said, I got off track a few times:dunno and enjoyed each trek, next summer I am hoping to have a Garmin 60cs . . .

Wisconsin's County Forest Program
County Forests are rich in history and admirable in accomplishments. County Forests originated in the Badger State and are found in only two others - Michigan and Minnesota. County Forests were created to rescue lands left abandoned by cut-and-run logging and failed homesteads of the late 1800's and early 1900's.

From the Clark County Trails you will travel north on Dickerson and Tieman Roads. This is a nice hard pack country road going past some prime farms and small woods and will end at Thorp, Wisconsin. In Thorp, get gas and maybe a snacks because the Big Woods start at Hwy 64. From Thorpe follow the route on some nice country gravel and it will take you to HWY 64 and the Perkinstown Motorized Trailhead/NF-326.
The old church is on the edge of Thorp. You can see the steeple from the TW*T.
Hwy 29 is the Historic Yellowstone Trail. (http://www.partner29.com/yellowstone_trail.html)
Just north of Thorp, you will travel past the 45 Degree Latitude, but unlike many other places in Wisconsin there is no signage. :dunno 45 degrees north latitude and 90 degrees west longitude is just 30 miles east of TW*T at Poniatowski, Wisconsin.
;) I photographed this 45 Degree Latitude sign in a different part of the state.

Perkinstown Trailhead
Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest
The Perkinstown Motorized Trail (NF-326) is a two-way trail developed for ATV and motorcycles (and snowmobiles in the winter). This ATV trail was a hoot. Trail Length: 20 miles.
The trail is highlighted by rolling terrain, a variety of woodlands and wetlands. A great variety of wildlife and vegetation can be found along the trail, the vegetation changes from low marsh areas to upland forest of hardwoods and pines. The northern most point is located near the Chippewa Campground on the shores of Chequamegon Waters. The TW*T uses part of this trail, then cuts off to some really great ATV trails. Just like Jackson and Clark counties to the south, Price county area is a perfect Dual Sport destination!:thumb

Cooperative study suggests Wisconsin’s black bear population is larger than thought.
The last DNR estimate that there were 13,000 black bears in the state, but a new comprehensive research study indicated about 37,000 with the majority of the bears located in the northern one third of the State.
The other good news is that more people will have opportunities to see these great animals in the wild. . . The bad news is more people will have opportunities to see these great animals in the wild . . .the other bad news is that I like to camp in the wild! In reality, the chance of a bear confrontation is close to the chance of being hit by lightning, but I do take precautions in lightning storms and camping in black bear contry..
A Bear of a Diet
Black bears locate their food by relying on their keen sense of smell. They feed mostly at twilight and through the night until sunrise. They spend the daylight hours loafing in dense cover near their feeding areas. If food is scarce in a particular year, bears will wander much farther from their home territory in search of food. During these years, bears can be seen more frequently during daylight hours.
Black Bear are also very good at climbing trees. In fact, black bears are the only North American bears that can climb trees. They seem to enjoy water and are good swimmers. Nearly all human-bear conflicts are a result of the animals’ search for food.
Black bears have large canine teeth, but their molars are flattened for grinding and chewing tough plant food, rather than slicing through flesh. Plants make up a large portion of their diet. However, they will eat just about anything: fruits, berries, green leaves, tubers, acorns, nuts, ants, beetles, bees, insect larvae, honey, fish, mice, squirrels, eggs, dead animals, grease on camping grills, garbage, you name it. Scientists call this type of diet omnivorous, which translates into "eats all."

Chad has done us a great service in putting this route together. Some of it will be familiar to anyone who has been dual-sport riding for a few years at events like Enduraid, or who has gone on the excellent rides led by Chad or Ernie Bell at GR3. But a lot of it is new to me.

Your words and pics are 1st rate. You should write a book.
I thought I knew Wisconsin pretty well. You're showing me the B-side of everything I thought I knew about the state. Thanks!

Love the roads, love your bikes, love your photos!..... but I gotta know, how many times has the dog puked in your tankbag???
Jim ..
I told the riders in the Wisconsin Club (at the meeting last night) to check this thread out. A few of them are already talking about doing this ride.
You should send something to the newsletter, or come to the April meeting. There were lots of questions ....

Yeah, in my book, any Beemer with disc brakes is a modern bike.

Just north of Thorp, you will travel past the 45 Degree Latitude,
but unlike many other places in Wisconsin there is no signage. :dunno
45 degrees north latitude and 90 degrees west longitude
is just 30 miles east of TW*T at Poniatowski, Wisconsin.
;)
Exact Center of the Northern Half of the Western Hemisphere
A hemisphere halfway point occurs at only four spots on Earth.
Two are under water,
one is in northwestern China,
and the other one is just 30 miles east of the Trans-Wisconsin Trail

A very special place in Wisconsin,
It is the starting spot for my northwoods adventures
If time permits, takes some of the side trails off of the Perkinstown ATV trail,

The southern start of the Perkinstown Trail
is a few miles from Medford, Wisconsin

—Tombstone Pizza
What do you want on your tombstone?
When the Simek brothers, owners of the Tombstone Tap in Medford, Wisconsin,
started making pizzas in 1962,
they were simply looking for a gimmick to pull customers into their tavern
located across from the cemetery.
By 1984 Tombstone was one of the three largest frozen pizza manufacturers in the country
Tombstone was acquired by Kraft General Foods in 1986.
I loved the pizza before 1986 pepspizza.com (http://pepspizza.com/)
Medford is the County Seat of Taylor Wisconsin
taken from the Taylor County website,
and describes the Perkinstown Trail
"Taylor County's landscape was gouged-out from ancient rock and soil by the Chippewa Lobe of the Wisconsin glacier and filled with the soil and debris carried by its rushing meltwaters. While the earth's crust has risen 160 feet since its passing, the topography left by the glacier remains. Rivers rush along trenches carved by the ice, conical hills called kames formed by soil deposited by meltwater streams dot the countryside, rolling hills scoured from once towering mountains surround kettle lakes now filled with crystal clear waters."

Randy Nissen has a great looking return route.
This new addition starts near the end of Chad's route in Cornucopia
and goes down to Hwy 70.
This could also be used as an alternate finish to Chad's route
since it runs parallel to it and crosses it a few times.
On the map
Chad's TWT route is in magenta
Randy's route is in red.
Route note:
I rode both routes, but many of the rest of the photos
from highway 70 north to Cornucopia were Randy's route

100 old church in Mason Wisconsin

Below:
Mason railroad depot
Most town on the rails had a depot,
at one time there were upwards of 40,000 RR depots in America,
with only a fraction of that many surviving today
After years of neglect, most depot are not used any more for their original intent,
but are being reclaimed and making a comeback
as community centerpieces.
Just like old churches, it makes my day to find surviving Railroad depots of Wisconsin.
Click on the link for Surviving Wisconsin railroad stations (http://www.american-rails.com/surviving-wisconsin-railroad-stations.html)
from St. Paul to Bayfield, WI. this line was used for lumber, minerals, goods, grain and cattle and the mail before the automobile days RR Map (http://www.abandonedrails.com/map.asp?c=176)
A bonus of the Mason Depot - a ATV trail was next to it on the RR right of way and I explored it a few miles before I decided to return on my TWT adventure

Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Cannonshot and thanks for your and Chad's work on the routes in the GPS file
A question from the TransWisconsinAdventure Trail site
Is there a longer version of the route?
Bryan Much (a.k.a. cannonshot ) used the TWT route and his vast knowledge of Michigan to create a monster route called the Wisconsin - Michigan Dual Sport adventure and its a big loop through Wisconsin and the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan and its 2050 miles long!
