Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the early K bike knowledge base on spline mantainence.
I had completed a maintence routine on the front of the chassis, but when spring arrived I opted to ride not wrench.
This past week I began to hear the first hints of something gone dry from the bike and was faced with no choice but to bite the bullet, due the duty. My thouroughly used 86 K100RT needed some attention.
I did my first spline lube, without (much) pain and no serious problems! I disassembeled it Thursday night. The rear splines were indeed dry. Hints of water were evident in what grease was present at he front splines and U-joint. I bought new rubber parts on Friday, re-assembled it Sunday, and after a short loop on Monday morning to see if all the parts were working, made a few small adjustments to the rear brake and rode a 150 mile loop through the Mississipi River Valley twisties.
Thanks again!
What an outstanding group!
