But the flasher/high beam works, wierd, so the headlight is ok it appears, so I took the switch apart (will I ever be able to get that spring and ball back in ???) and it seems fine, no manually made connection will make the headlight work.
What am I missing ?

Check the headlight relay. It is in the headlight shell. The high beam flash
does not use the relay, but regular high and low beam do.

Time for a new bulb?
Typically the "low" filament burns itself out long before the lightly used "high" one will.

What am I missing ? I agree with the light bulb assessment and, no...you probably will not be able to get spring/ball detent back where it belongs. Run the high beam during the daylight hours to conserve your low beam element. You can drive at night with a low beam but if all you have is a high beam, it becomes a problem for oncoming drivers.
