Good day. Bought a '81 R100 RT in spring '04. This is my first BMW and have put about 45,000 miles on it since then. My question is odometer was broken when purchased and I have no clue as to actual mileage. I'm thinking I'm probably the fourth owner and have no real history on bike other than the following: Valve job done, new brake discs and pads, and rear wheel hub driven spline replaced 2002 or 2003. I replaced rod bearings, rings, timing chain w/ drive sprocket and tensioner winter 2006. I learned about oil filter case O-ring problem when rod knock became evident on trip to Alabama fall '05. I live in northern Minnesota! STP to the rescue! Made it back successfully. Cam chain not too bad but tensioner shot. Compression ring end gaps outer end of spec. Ate about 1 qt oil in 3000 miles. Replaced alternator brushes and rotor 2007 also. Anyone have a estimate on total miles? Thank you.

Current ridden bikes: BMW, '72 Norton Commando Cafe, '72 Norton Roadster, '75 Triumph Trident.

Too many unknowns.

Consistent low oil can accelerate the ring, bearing, and chain guide wear. Lack of normal maintanance can cause the splines to go south. Stored outside with no cover can wreck rubber and allow moisture to creep into the cases.

Very possibly over 150K but I'm rebuilding an '83 R100 with 16K verified miles and it has most of your problems...caused by the situation above.

R100/7'78 vintage, bought new by ME:)...I have 335000 miles on the original motor, valves, timing chain, etcetctec..New alternator by Omega last year and new splines on the rear end a long time ago by BMW Dealer in Phoenix,Oregon. I put bigger pistons in at 104000 miles and new tranny bearings at 65000 and thats about all this bike has had for 335000 miles. What a bike:). Still pumps 140+ compression and I ride her frequently to this day. YOU have an Airhead, you have a winner! Folks find it hard to believe the valves can go this far, but I have living proof and the motor runs soooo perfect, I love it:) Randy. I dare BMW to come get it, they cannot have it back to see what they did right!:thumb :usa :dance
