I have an '84 R80GS. I recently bought a new tachometer (BMW) for that model and I am having problems with accuracy. Below 5000 rpm the gage reads double; for example, if it is running at 1000 rpm the gage reads 2000 rpm. Only above 5000 rpm will the gage read accurately.
What should I look at/for? There is only one plug that connects it to the bike and I have checked the wiring and plugs and they appears normal. I feel like the problem is in the bike, because this is my second tachometer. The first tachometer I returned back to the dealer under warranty and they replaced it with a new one, but I am having the same problem.

Do you have resistor caps on your spark plugs, and do they have the correct resistance?
