Was about 2 car lengths behind a car the other night when a piece of concrete was thrown out from under the car directly in front of me. I just had time to slightly cut to the left before hitting the baseball sized chunk with my front tire. To my releif /amazement the bike just shuddered and then continued in a straight line. When I pulled over to assess the damage there was a "chalky" mark on the right side of the front tire. A through examination showed no cuts and I continued home listening/feeling for any vibration or noise. The telelever front suspension did its job, I'm not sure my Sportster would have fared so well in the same circumstances. The next day I rechecked the front tire and rim for cuts, nicks, etc and will monitor the front tire each day until I'm sure there is no problem.

GOOD NEWS! Glad that worked out so well!
Near the top of my concerns about night riding is just what you came upon or a significant chunk out of the pavement (we have many in Indiana) and the little time we have to react at speed given sight limitations, plus traffic. I travel for work and have seen just about everything but a bidet on the road. (Sadly, including a dumped body)
As i plan my first 'tour' through the southwest this winter, I've pretty much decided to not night ride - which is when I prefer to drive when on more then 2 wheels (all night). The trip will be longer, but I thought I would give it a try and see how it goes.
I'm not saying I don't or haven't ridden at night.
Given the possibilities, thanks for sharing what happened.

I'm really glad there was no wreck!! Thanks for a happy ending story. We all get more than enough of the other kind, day after day.
