View Full Version : LED and other lighting options

What are my LED options for the brake and tail lights on my '95 K1100LT? I've noticed that bulb replacements often come with the caveat that they are not suited for bikes, like the K1100, which have an integrated "bulb out" warning system. They claim that use of such a bulb will show the bulb as OUT and the ABS won't reset. Any one have suggestions for (low cost) rear lighting alternatives. I'd like to use bulb replacemants, failing that I'll look into easily mounted rear and front light flashing LED alternatives. Also looking for any suggestions for front auxilliary lights that are easily mounted and hooked up.
All the best,
Jimmy

Jimmy,
I've seen some talk about additional tail lights and flashing LED's, look around at some of the other threads. I had thought about it, too, but sounds like the potential for problems are likely.
One thing I thought I might mention. In '97 or so, someone was offering flashing LED brake lights and I put them in my K75S. I was stationed at Ft. Lewis, Washington at the time, and one day I was driving down the road near Spanaway and two motorcycle policemen noticed my lights while we were stopped next to each other at a red light. I don't recall if they were state patrol, sheriffs or city police, but one of them leaned over to me and asked me if the flashing LEDs were stock. Like a dummy, I said "no" and he said they weren't legal and I should take them out. I never checked the city/county/state law to make sure and had never heard of that happening to anyone else, but I guess the lesson learned here is to check in your area/state, etc to see if that's a problem. Anyone else ever heard of that?

Brake lights. I've used the Hyperlights tied into the existing brake light.
Aux lights. Motorcycle Consumer Digest recently rated a whole bunch of different drivings lights and one if the cheapest was the highest rated. Whatever you select, I'd suggest that you wire them in with a relay set like the one sold by Eastern Beaver.

LED bulbs can be used as a replacement bulb if you put a resistor in the line to fool the system.

Hi Scott,
I have a K75 and when I put a Tailblazer Led flashing light in the tailight my brake warning light stayed on. I put the reg bulb back in just to deal with it for the time being.
Would you please elaborate on the type of resistor, where to buy and where to install in the line? I haven't called Kisan yet but your experience may tell the tale.
Thank You
