I'm off to Florida. No, not on the bike. But I'm sure it will be a nice vacation no matter. Flying back to Chicago Thanksgiving night so I'll miss having the big meal, which is just fine with me. Even tho I won't be celebrating with anyone special this year, I hope that you and yours have plans to share this special day.
What are your plans for the day? Traditional meal with family and loved ones? A special ride? Or a day full of football? Tell us what you'll be doing.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

I have to split it in half so it will cook in time here:

That was a 26 pound free range turkey I won in a raffle a few years ago. Was the first time I'd used the smoke pit for a turkey. I'll tell you what the most incredible surprise was, the smoked gravy that those pan drippings made. It was absolutely to DIE for.

My family will be coming up from LA. I always do the turkey on the BBQ, and it comes out great, and usually in about 1/3 less time than in the oven.
But I also buy another turkey (surprise! they're cheaper then!) a day or two after T'giving, and cook that up in my wood smoker, then freeze it. As Nik already knows, slow smoked turkey is really delectable!

Good on you, DarrylRi. I'm thinking of buying a turkey (wish I could smoke it) when I get back in town. In past years, I would have dinner on Saturday night after my return from FL...maybe I'll do that again this year. Sounds like a plan to me! Now, I have to think of someone who would want turkey again 2 days later! :doh

Darryl,
My smoker is actually a hybrid of sorts. If I hit it right, I get about 90 minutes or of good smoke (as told by the pink smoke ring under the skin). Last year's Christmas turkey was almost perfectly done, with about an 1/8th to 3/16ths inch ring. I have taken to brining (brine - ing) my turkey the night before. Saw Alton Brown do it - couple gallons of hot water, pound of Kosher salt and a pound of honey. Warm water dissolves all of it. Then throw in a couple bags of ice to flash cool the water. Turkey goes in. I use an old wheeled cooler that I keep for brining only (did a couple of Boston Butts that way using a molasses brine), remove, pat dry, season skin and cavity side and drop onto pit.
The early smoke really infuses the bird with flavor, then the pit slowly cooks the bird for another 3 or so hours. I put it on around 7 am (meaning I touch off the pit in the dark at about 6 am). Bird is removed around 11-noon and put on racks and into the oven to ensure 160 degrees is reached and allow drippings to collect in the pans below.
2beers

xp8103, would you be willing to send some pics of the pit smoker my way? I have one of the metal ones you can get at Menards but I have a hard time keeping the temp even. PM if desired.
Dang, them turkeys look yummy!! And I too will never do a turkey without brining!!

We will be driving down with my mother-in-law to Dallas, TX to my Daughter's family. She gets to cook a thankgiving meal for the first time in her new home. They are excited.
I wish I had a motorcycle down there. I bet it will be beautiful. Maybe in a couple of years we can retire to Austin, TX and enjoy the winter Texas rides.
PS: We will be stopping at Sweetwater BBQ at St Robert in MO on Wednesday. An excellent BBQ meal.

I'll probably be in Abilene. My best friend's dad is living there now, and my friend is living with me after the bottom fell out of his life up in Denver. It'll be us and his dad and his aunt. My friend's dad is an old-fashioned Texas kind of guy, so the food will be traditional and simple but OH-SO-delicious. That man can cook.
I also have great memories of a Thanksgiving a few years ago. At the time I was dating a Taiwanese woman, and we went to her sister and brother-in-law's house, and the extended family were there too. The meal was an interesting mix of American and Chinese. There were two turkeys, one roasted and the other smoked. There was a scattering of traditional American side-dishes, and also several interesting Chinese things. VERY tasty. After dinner most of the family retreated to a back room to play mah jong, but since I don't know how to play nor speak the language, my date and I went upstairs to the kids' playroom and amused ourselves drawing cartoons on the markerboard. She even tried to teach me a little Mandarin, including how to pronounce her real name (she used an western name in daily life). It was a great evening I'll never forget.

We were supposed to have everyone here for turkey day, but found out tonight my 88 yr. old father in law has to go in next week for possible stints for his heart; he had chest pain Monday. Good chance that open heart surgery is coming mid week if the stints don’t work out, so Thanksgiving consists of him getting through this stint thing, or at worst open heart surgery. Real tough time for my wife and family.
I had posted earlier in the year about my own Dad's heart surgery, right on a holiday 8 yrs ago. Open heart surgery the day before thanksgiving, and he never made it off the respirator. But then again, he smoked for years, and my dad-in-law never smoked, but it's got us spooked with coincidence.
Best case, we bring turkey to his house. Worse case is we eat turkey at a MN hospital.
If anybody has a special relationship with those above, put a good word in for John B. He's a great fella.

we're going to florida, trailering down the HP2 (or the G/SPD+ if the HP2's kickstand remains out of commission...) eating turkey on thursday, low country shrimp boil on friday, then going out and exploring the ocala national forest, trying not to get lost (too badly).
on saturday, we will enjoy watching the GATORS kick half-ass-u's ass, then back to atlanta, and back to work.
hope everyone has a good time planned. we need more good times. :nod

My son will be home from college for the first time, along with his girlfriend and 16 others, making it a bit cramped in our humble little abode. At least we won't have to run the furnace with all the bodies here! Pretty traditional meal, my wife has won local competitions for her apple pie, so we all save room for dessert.

Hi, All,
I'll be taking a nap. I'm scheduled for the graveyard shift on Thanksgiving, same on Christmas. All of you have a Happy Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Kool Kwanzaa, Rollicking Ramadan (yes, I know Ramadan was a couple of months ago), or a Great Whatever Floats Your Boat! Of course, all you Canadians have already had your Thanksgiving, but you can still have a Merry Christmas, etc.

Another SPECIAL DAY when the family gets together!!!!!!! Don't see them anyother day of the year. The OTHER family comes down,(60 miles) eats the fantastic meals my wife prepares and then the husband goes and sleeps on the living room floor. It is a tremendous amount of fun. However, I am thankful for having a wife like I have and a beautiful daughter now living and working in Florida. As for the rest, OH WELL.

Thanksgiving will be at my place this year.
It will be bitter/sweet because both my sister and I are going to try to keep my father and kid brother glued together as my mom (married to my dad for 63 years) passed away last May and TG was her favorite holiday.
I am making the family's favorite dishes and I have ordered the special cake.
I wish I could ride on TG, but it IS cold here in WI!
I buried my 54 year old brother-in-law today. Thanksgiving Day will be very low key in my house. I'll be very busy consoling my wife.

As a former resident of the wonderful State of Maine and an avid participant in many great Thanksgiving meals in Portland, I wish you all the very best of family times! Although I have been back periodically for this event, I have not been for the last few years. Still try and have a little celebration on this great Canadian soil but do miss that crowded little dining room full of family and irresistible fixin's. And, to make it all so very complete: I would go down and watch my old high school (Deering High) whoop Portland High ass :whistle at their yearly final football game competition. Enjoy! -Bob

Not as much as needed. Standard camp food, mostly dried and instant stuff considering the hike in, but with an Asian flair. Since we left most of our camping gear back in the states, we (my wife and I) weren't nearly as prepared as we should have been. Would've been eatin' good had this been stateside.
Students showed up with everything ranging from literally nothing (sponged off other students & adults) to carry-out and cheesecake.
Here is a view of the beach.

Had a great Thanksgiving, ate too much and watched too much football. Rode my bike down to Tamoka State Park Saturday to visit my daughter, son-in-law, and grandson. The weather was great so A1A was the route of choice all the way down to Ormond Beach before turning back north to Tamoka State Park. Many other riders (solo and groups) were also enjoying a wonderful riding day. I hope everyone had a safe Thanksgiving.

I had a great time in Big Bend......the flood damage is cleared away and the Park is fully open. You can still see how high the water was, though......impressive. Ft. Davis on Saturday night was crystal clear and 35 degrees. The star party at McDonald Observatory was amazing. Got to see Jupiter and 4 of it's moons, and much more. Highly recommended (especially in the Summer!:D )
