I know there's a thread around here somewhere (created by Bubba), but I wanted to start a fresh one.

Toss up a couple of album, CD or MP3 covers and show us what's on your iPod, desktop, walkman, discman, hi-fi, turntable, standard or satellite radio.

Some of today's highlights:

Tony Rice is a Rounder Records bluegrass artist. I remember hearing the cut "Manzanita" back in the 80s.

Man, your living room looks like my shop! I love it. I'm an hour from the ovation factory and usually visit once a year. Fender bought them last January and they have moved Guild and Tacoma from the west coast into the old mill here in CT where they build the Ovations. Can't wait till the next visit...

Most are fairly modern guitars the lighter ovation I bought new in 1970 a nice Gold tone Banjo and the little mandolin is a 1914 Gibson A model nice old piece. Also Winchester 73 on mantel in case things get out of hand.

AWESOME!!Yes, Geddy's voice IS an acquired taste. The last several releases, he was somewhat lower in tone (as well as on his very good solo cd). But on Snakes and Arrows (their latest) he is back up in the 'high' range again. But, I have to say, S&N is a awesome release!

Glad you caught them early! :) I didn't till umm 1982? It was the Grace Under Pressure tour. Wow. Very impressed. Haven't missed a tour since, often multiple shows, but not always.

As someone already pointed out, Neil is a hard core RS rider.

These guys just jam. They got caught caught up in mergers and take overs. I bought their first cd (this one) back when George H W Bush was president. They had a hit - Dizz Knee Land and it ROCKED! (they had a line 'I just flipped off President George' - (which I thought was ballsy)

So I bought the CD ~ wow - the whole disc just jams. Based on that, I bought their next CD, which was just as good, if not better. Hmm Bought the 3rd 4th .. SOLID. Went to find them on the web, and they had just decided to take a break. Guitarist has hand issues. Anyway, they started touring again and have released an live album and a EP. They all have solo projects. Anyway they jam. Buy this cd, buy it used. if you don't like it, I'll give ya your money back! (I have no affiliation with DADA at all, yada yada) www.dadatheband.com

They have some pretty profound lyrics. I always loved this one: "Can't this car go any faster .. .. Cuz I can still see where I am."

Yea, the guys put on a great show! When they started touring again, I went all over to see them. The last 2 years they played late Oct/Early Nov at the Coach house in San Juan Capistrano. Was always a good excuse to visit family out that way. This year that show is either just before or just after Christmas. Had thoughts of making my maiden tour on the RT to see it, but that's a little ambitious me thinks. They are going to be out in Philly for New Years, and Boston just after. That's closer to me, so
that's the plan so far.

Nice to hear from someone familiar with them! Thanks for the insight!!

I love this album. Significance not just in time and space but how I viewed music as a whole.
Maybe it was the incredible Sushi tonight (possibly one of the top 5 meals of my life and I know, ginger and wasabi sometimes has that effect) but I have not heard music made like this in a long time. When you heard this album the first time, there was no mistake, you found something new.

Late last night
I was speaking with my wife again
When she turned into a momur again
Tried to put me uptight again
She took me favorite guitar
And she smashed it on the floor
When she danced around on top of it,
I thought I might get sore
Just a little bit
sore . . . .

Mayhem? Man, I'll bet we're some of the only ones in the MOA that know about bands like that. Haha. Can't say I really care for them, though. But, if you want some siiiiiick Scandinavian metal, check out Emperor, or specifically;

Emperor is alright. What about Finntroll, Sentenced - both from Finland (some say that is Scandinavia, some not).

Lately I am getting industrialized: Rammstein, Skinny Puppy, Frontline Assembly, Crystal Method, etc

The live albums, (Either the authorized, complete with the William Tell Overture noodling or the unauthorized WBAB booty are terrific and capture the essence of this mostly unknown band.) I think John Palumbo went on and did at least one solo.
The entire collection is very difficult to find, I have bits and pieces.

This again is about where my head was musically and how this album twisted me up. This one brought hard rock and southern rock together for me which was completely new.

When they got "heavy" they were as good as any band at that time IMHO.

The 3D "inlay", which is really an outlay and only on the original release was pretty cool too.

Bobby Caldwell was a great drummer, could do quick rolls better than any I have heard who played a kit and not timbales. Met a similar end as Jaco, street fighting.

Just added Captain Beyond to my itunes. I'm slowly converting my vinyl to itunes with an ION USB turntable. Today was Cleo Laine Live at Carnegie Hall, John Mayall's The Turning Point, and an unnamed album with Norman Blake/Tut Taylor/Sam Bush/Butch Robins/Vassar Clements/David Holland and Jethro Burns. The last is the newest; recorded in 1974, Cleo in 1973 and John in 1969.

Not on this one, using Pocket Tunes. My old Garmin's player would arrange (alphabetically) by song title or by artist and maybe one other criteria I don't remember right now. Alphabetical song titles does give you a fairly good 'random' mix, if you think about it.

Today's ten:

1) Holiday - Nazareth (will not be followed by another Nazareth tune since I have none!)
2) Happy Together - The Turtles
3) Foreplay - Boston (live in Cleveland)
4) Day After Day - Badfinger at the BBC
5) The Real Me - The Who (Chicago bootleg 1979)
6) 10538 Overture - ELO
7) Evil Woman - ELO :bluduh
8) Knockin' On Heaven's Door - Warren Zevon

63-67 or so, check out the first part of his autobiography "stoned" it's really good stuff. part II, not so much.

he's got a show on sirius ch 25 as well.

Love the variety in folks' mixes. I've been a big fan of shuffling songs since mix tapes. Anyhow, today the tracks playing on my iPod Shuffle on the ride to work were great. I don't have a tracklist since the thing is a Shuffle. However, I did just listen to a great set based on Help You Ann by the Lyres. Here are the first ten songs:

Help You Ann: The Lyres
She Pays the Rent: The Lyres
Bad News Travels Fast: Fuzztones
This Damn Nation: The Godfathers
Busy Man: DMZ
Pattern Skies: The Greenhornes
Teenage Depression: Eddie and the Hot Rods
Final Solution: Pere Ubu
How Do You Know?: The Lyres
Mannequin: Wire

Gotta say, ain't technology grand? Now to set a new mix for the afternoon...

i think this is the album they hate cause someone layered the recording with an early dbx hiss reduction. you can actually hear it on some of the drum tracks, its no wonder a duo with ears like those guys can't stand it.

If I remember correctly, I bought their first 3 or 4 albums back in the early and mid 70's. Liked their sound then and still do. Their music has never gone out of style for me.

Is it just me, or has there been a renaissance of John Prine music lately. Seems I've heard a few covers that sounded familiar, and when I dug deeper, they were his tunes. Great Stuff.

Re: Thin Lizzy. Did anyone see the VH-1 show about them a few years ago? Phil Lynott was completely unitelligible, so much so that they had to add subtitles when he spoke. Major Irish brogue (I think Belfast?). It amazed me that I could understand anything that he had sang. Good stuff too.

Got to hear John Prine years ago, early 90's, live at the Orpheum Theater in down town Memphis, Tn. Really enjoyabe. He was the warm up for Bonnie Raite. I would go and hear him live again and I have to my regret missed him several times. That was a good session at the Orpheum, both he and Raite did good sets. John Mellencamp was in the audience and he and one of band members came on stage and did a couple songs all unanounced. Excellent. It was a magical music evening. :groovy

Prine is number one in my book. Listening to a record of his about 12 years ago did one of those magical things in my head where everything made sense. Prine is the real deal.

Fitzgerald and Sundown are top notch songs.

Other than that, I can't get into alot more of Lightfoot's stuff.

Before I left work I listened to a set including these tracks:

Teenage Fanclub – I Don't Want Control of You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FHwkZPrJHw)
Brian Eno – Little Fishes
Big Star – My Life Is Right
The Zombies – I Want Her She Wants Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJkRhVEfNwE) (nice, underrated song)
The Brian Jonestown Massacre – Caress (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7bKioH-Y40) (excellent track, had forgotten about it)
Shout Out Louds – There's Nothing
The New Pornographers – Ballad of a Comeback Kid (really nice)
Can – Paperhouse
The Clientele – Spirit
Big Star – In The Street (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cT8ihOjOf1g&feature=related) (theme song for recent sitcom)

These tracks were pulled via Genius in iTunes based on E.M.P.T.Y. by the Clientele (http://www.lala.com/#song/1801721347594745272). I really like how Genius works for the most part. However, if the stuff I want to listen to is based on a 60s or 80s garage track not available at the iTunes Store, forget about it. That's when shuffle works best.

I've thought about iTunes alternatives, but as a Mac user, my choices are limited. Are any other Mac heads out there using Songbird or something else?

Almost cut my hair
Happened just the other day
It's gettin' kind of long
I could've said it was in my way

But I didn't and I wonder why
I feel like letting my freak flag fly
And I feel like I owe it, yeah ... to someone, yeah

Well, must be because I had the flu this Christmas
Oh, yeah and I'm not feeling up to par
Oh, I tell you baby this increases my paranoia
Yeah, like looking in my mirror and seeing a police car

Well, well, I'm not, I'm not giving in an inch to fear
Well, you know I've promised myself this year
Well, I feel oh, like I owe it, I owe, I owe it to someone
Oh ... like I owe it to someone

[Instrumental (Electric Guitar)]

Oh, yes when I get myself together
Yeah, you can find me in that sunny southern weather, yeah

I'm goin' to find a space inside a laugh, yes
Separate the wheat from some chaff
Oh, and I feel ...
Like I owe it, yeah ... to someone

Grateful Dead channel made the long ride home just right. Continious Dead 24/7; I thought I died and went to heaven when I found out about that awhile ago.

As of late though, as will be tomorrow in the subaru and her tape deck, I will be playing a composition I booted off Dejavu, 4 way street records, and an obscure CSN album of which I forgt the name. Hamony is soo sweet!

Half the live shows I caught in 08 were "classic" geezers who's heydays were 60s-early 80s and they were all great shows: The Police, Van Der Graaf Generator, Ray Davies (who is still amazing after all these years), Elvis Costello, Strawbs, and David Byrne.

Okay I could say that today I have the soft tones of Holiday Music rafting thru the house, but honestly it's time to battle with the "Dust Bunnies" so I have my Naughty Mommy Mix CD echoing thru the house...

Bad Girlfriend--Theory of a Deadman
Family Reunion-- Saliva
Burn It To the Ground-- Nickelback
The Bleeding--Five Finger Death Punch
FMLYHM-- Seether
Addicted-- Saving Abel
Famous-- Puddle Of Mudd
6 Gun Quota-- Seether
Rescue Me-- Buckcherry
Ladies & Gentlemen-- Saliva
The Beautiful People--Marilyn Manson
S.E.X. -- Nickelback
Hemorrhage(in my hands)-- Fuel
Get Stoned-- Hinder
It's Been A While -- Stained
Piss It All Away-- Puddle Of Mudd
Last Resort-- Papa Roach
So What! -- PINK
Fake It-- Seether
Something In Your Mouth--Nickelback
So Many People-- Neurosonic

So that's just a bit of what I'm listening to today.

Man, I grew up listening to Mott and would love to see them get together and tour the US.

Not real likely; certainly not with Buffin on drums. He's apparently got Alzheimer's and only managed to play on two songs during the third show. Most of it was Martin Chambers (Pretenders). For some reason, Morgan Fisher wasn't asked to participate and, of course, Mick Ronson's been gone for years.

There is a remarkably active and cohesive cyber-group dedicated to Ian Hunter (and Mott) here (http://www.ianhunter.com/). Click into "Messageboard" and you'll find a delightful bunch of loons where you can keep up on this kind of stuff. I knew about the shows months earlier, but couldn't really justify going to London for them.

I've always had a bizarre and keen interest in minimalist/repetitive music. Especially if it's played on acoustic instruments.

I remember seeing Einstein on the Beach premiere at the Brooklyn Academy of Music back in the early 80s and by the third act (about 90 mins in) Phillip Glass, its composer, was snoring loudly in the row behind me.
