What are the strengths and weaknesses of the F650 -single- in the used bike market?

What years had what problems?

Are the carbed versions much more finicky than the FI'ed?

Does one require an "oiler" to be safe?

I am in the process of joining f650.com.

Most of your questions have been asked and answered on the F650 board which you are joining.

My mechanic advised getting a 2004 or later model if you can afford it. That year they went with the dual plugs and the BMS-C II improved engine management system for better fuel efficiency and response. When you asked about an oiler, are you talking about a Scott oiler or similar? Most just lube the chain with ATF or automatic transmission fluid after every other tank of gas or each evening during a trip. Makes the chain last about twice as long.

Mine is a 2003 fuel injected - the Rotax engine is really amazing - I've never owned a single that is so fast, powerful and smooth. The bike is light and handles great. I've ridden her on plenty of dirt roads and it is a very versatile bike.
Mine has ABS which is nice.

I've not serviced it myself yet but plan to on the 18k service. So far the valves have not needed adjusting. This is a pretty bulletproof bike.

Good Luck

You will find all the informaton you need at F650.com. I gathered a lot of info here when I bought my '06 Dakar in 2007. I went for the fuel injected, dual spark version based on some things I read. It has been a great bike but like all bikes there are trade offs. I prefer it in the dirt to some of my friends heavy 1200GS but sometimes I wish I had more of a true dirt bike. On the other hand there are times when I am running a lot of asphalt that the 1200GS would be a better bike than the light weight 650. I guess that is why a lot of people have several bikes.

I have been quite happy with my 2001 Dakar, a model you will be told to stay away from due to engine managment issues (surging). For whatever reasons mine has never given me a lick of trouble, it may well depend on the individual bike.

The weakest spot is probably the water pump impeller seals, followed by steering head bearings. The seal issue is unique to the F650 but steering head bearings seem to be problematic with many BMWs.

Glad to hear you like your 01 Dakar. I bought one with about 6K miles on it just before the snow started to fly and amwaiting to get it on the road.

I'm sure it was a real problem for some folks but mine runs like a clock. A very dirty clock.:rocker

I had a '03 F650GS with over 35000 miles on it. It was a great bike. I would get on it today and ride it anywhere.

They get even better than that after they are broken in. :)
