View Full Version : Hiding Behind Your User Name
KGT1200
11-15-2008, 07:24 PM
Now many of us that have an alter ego of a user name that is not your real name have been accused of having a "hidden agenda" to that I say that’s not true! Put your Doctor freud hat away in the hall closet, take off yer rose colored glasses and just listen to this!
We all are overgrown children that like to play games, and one of those games is rename your self, then pretend to be 14, and talk about motorcycles and other related stuff...
My question to you all is how did you name your yourself on the BMWMOA forum? And if there already is a thread here about this, as in ADV, sorry! We want to hear your story too! I hmbly request a NEW thread!
Mine is derived from a place in the foothills of Colorado where the book cliffs around where I used to live looked blood red, especially with sunrise and sunset. For 20 years I had a biz called red cliff ranch, aka Redclfco...I love that spot, and always will... :p
Where does your screen name come from?
moondog
11-15-2008, 07:52 PM
No hidden motives, etc. I use to work for a large Canadian aircraft manufacture, fixing Learjets in Hartford, Ct. One of my work mates named everyone who came to work there. Ironically he never named himself. Where "Moondog" came from is unknown. Some where in the recess' of this guy's mind it came out. One guy was "Dancing bear". Another guy was "Elvis" for his sideburns or ( he was priveledged to have two knick names) "zoom" because he owned a Nissan. Another guy was the "Colonel" because of his advanced age and status. As for me, I have been called worse growing up to the point of being cruel, having the name Moondog was a pleasure. It was always used in a friendly way so I decided I liked it, so I kept it. Just don't call me late for dinner!:p

My username was given to me by fellow cyclists in the 80's...we all were sponsored in charity rides by Mangia Pizza in Austin..their store mascot was a huge green Godzilla...we had 6 guys with the same first name...(all about same age when Steve was a common name it seems) so...we all used a part of our last name combined with Zilla to not be confused when someone hollered STEVE! It happened once and we had a big wreck:doh
Nothing sinister there...it just stuck...20+ years later they still all call me that

University of Notre Dame, mid 1970's I was a student, contemplating becoming an ex-student and taking off on my new BMW R75/5. An ex-roommate, whose father was an FBI agent, confided to me:"Man, if you are wearing a priest collar, doesn't matter if you have long hair or what, the law won't bother you---go down to the Bookstore and buy a priest collar, and you'll be cool!" I was not too sure about Ted's recommendation, but I did go to the Bookstore, looked at the "Friar Tuck" brand collars, picked one up and went to the check out. The little Polish lady at the cash register was so nice to me and wished me well on my preaching. Hmm..... this might just work!:D
Well, I did ride off on my BMW and discovered the world. One point in that journey brought me to Table Rock Park in SC, where I met BMWMOA at the Second National Rally:deal Somehow in those hazy years, the nickname "Reverend Willie" was created and my police cover has become something of legend. That collar has been on many a journey and situations, but it still fits me, thirty-four years later. I had to use a piece of a bleach bottle to replace the lost white insert in the collar, but it still survives. I have had people ask me to marry them (I told them I could only give overnight absolutions and would need some good confessionals as payment!), but have not been asked to do any human funerals (don't ask!).
I'm not a man of the cloth,....but I am a man of the Kevlar!

11-15-2008, 09:03 PM
A guy I used to work with many years ago used to go around saying "What's new with you, bubbagazoo?" I took a shine to it. So, when I started doing Internet stuff, I began using Bubbagazoo as my screen name. It's also my own personal domain name -- bubbagazoo.ca

26667
11-15-2008, 09:46 PM
mostly laziness. When i first hooked up w the forum, if I recall, my member # was a default moniker. For some reason, when i first joined BMWMOA it was point of pride. I was in a motorcycle club and I had a number! so I left it.
I don't really have a nick or handle that i use in other situations, so till I earn one, it's 26,667. ...Now that I think of it, my wife calls me Bunny:heart and my son thinks my vanity plate should read BADDAD.:scratch
My nefarious moniker that I hide behind was given to me by my first granddaughter and it stuck.
skidgillen
11-15-2008, 10:09 PM
Mine is a nickname that was given to me after I wrecked my 1982 Honda CX500 Turbo when I was 21 years old. I left about 120 feet of skid marks before I bounced off of the curb head first. Always wore a helmet and still do, otherwise I wouldn't be here today, much older and wiser.

bullit7801
11-15-2008, 10:56 PM
Well, Bullit is the nickname by brother gave me the night we shaved my head for the first time. That was February of 1969 when lots of young men had hair down to their sholders. My avitar moto is the reason I shaved it. I have worn it this way ever since. The 7801 comes from the model years of my two BMWs, a 1978 R100RS and a 2001 R1100RSA. Simple.
Oh, and by the way, talking about hidding behind a screen name, I note that the majority posting to this thread don't use a sig line including their names. :stick

Petrodog
11-16-2008, 07:33 AM
PETRODOG (the petroleum pooch) is a natural, given that as a Petroleum Engineer who has been sniffing around the oilpatch for waaaay tooo long. Working like a dog at times, but generally having a great time and meeting some really nice folk around the world.
Petrodog was "born" in a Mexican fishing camp many years ago. My nickname is Fritz - which seems to be difficult or impossible for Spanish speakers to pronounce. Petrodog was easier for them to say, their suggestion was El Gordo - which although true just did not ring well in my ears.

My name is Dan Birdsall. All my life I've been some variation of Bird - some OK and some not. I married Polly Barnett. We became barnbird and stayed that way on the internet for many years. After Polly died, I thought it was time to shed the Barn part, and because I like to travel and have lived in many different places, I came up with Vagabond, oops, Vagabird. Birdsall is my brother. ;)

In High School I had an all original 68 Z/28. I joined a local car club and got involved in slalom racing, closed course racing one car at a time against a timer. I virtually owned my class (F Stock), and got the nickname Leadfoot. It was just something that came to mind when I got my first BMW and was researching some BMW racing history before joining BMWMOA.
Man I miss that car!!

shire2000
11-16-2008, 10:00 AM
Mine came from a combination. I always loved J.R.R. Tolkien's Books, The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rigs trilogy. Originally read them at about age 12 and have always been fascinated with his style of writing. Wrote a huge essay about it in University. I was given the nickname Hobbit back in University due to being rather overweight with very long hair and beard. Both reached past my waist at the time. When I got married my wife was into purebred dogs and we started breeding them. Our kennel name became Shire Kennels. We named all our dogs after different characters from the books. Just slightly obsessed, I think. The 2000 part came about from the year we first got high speed internet. Therefor Shire2000 became our main email address. Have used it for all online names for the past 8 years.

I was 12 and searching for a name on AOL that wasn't taken yet. It stuck.
I stopped playing drums professionally in 2005 after Warped Tour and after I got sick of seeing my former band-mates on MTV, and have since pursued my education with I learn guitar. As general electives while building up pre-req's for other classes, I took a year of classical guitar and two years of music theory. I'll be back in the music scene in a couple years.
I still wanna jam on drums if anyone's down. :ear
tessler
11-16-2008, 10:36 AM
When your last name is Tessler, people invariably hear it as if it were spelled like the famed Serbian electrical engineer....
http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/pic/adc/10098920A~Nikola-Tesla-Posters.jpg
Or they conjure an association (especially when someone discovers I also played bass guitar professionally) with a Hair Band from the 80s (also inspired by the same famous engineer):
http://images.thegauntlet.com/pics/Tesla%20-%20Band.jpg
But in the end it becomes your handle; your calling card and the easiest thing to blurt out when someone wants your attention. To friends and schoolmates since I was a kid, my last name is my only name. To my wife, whenever she is irritated with me, this concept is carried to it's ultimate connotation.
scoobs
11-16-2008, 11:02 AM
My surname is "Scobie", and back in the late '60's when "Scooby-Doo " was on the telly it was a natural slide into "scooby" then "Scoobs".
Unfortunately, in the 15 years I've been living in Georgia I still haven't got the locals able to pronounce my name properly; but if that's all I've got to worry about then life is pretty good!!

Well, Barry's came about from highschool and being one of the "gearheads". They all had nicknames in Auto Mechanic Class and with a last name like Strohbusch, 2Beers was just a natural choice. Just to explain here in the midwest you could buy Stroh's Beer and Busch Beer. We've been sweethearts since 9thgrade (rival schools, but that's another story) and I don't mind being the Mrs.
cheesewhiz
11-16-2008, 12:49 PM
I spell mine a bit different but the highlighted parts of this product description seemed to fit:
Cheez Whiz (sic) is a thick processed cheese sauce or spread sold by Kraft Foods. It was developed by a team led by food scientist Edwin Traisman (1915–2007) and was first marketed in 1953.[1]
The bright yellow, viscous liquid usually comes in a glass jar, and is used as a topping for corn chips, hot dogs, cheesesteaks, celery, and other foods. It is marketed in the United States, Canada, Venezuela, and the Philippines.
The product has been sold in a narrow jar that tapered towards the base when sold as a spread. When Cheese Whiz is advertised as a dip or a sauce, the jars are larger and more of a squat cylindrical shape.

11-16-2008, 05:19 PM
When I was stationed in Germany in the late 1980s I was the grand champion of veggin' out in my barracks, to my friends started calling me 'The Veg.' There's also an X-rated story behind the name, but that's all I'll say about that right now. Anyway, it's what all my friends have called me ever since.
Well, except for my brother, who now calls me
http://vegomatic.smugmug.com/photos/234193258_puhKf-M.jpg
(That's him waiting for me to exit customs/immigration at Tokyo Narita Int'l Airport)
Being The Veg was especially cool back when I was a rock'n'roll bass player. There was a small underground-music fanzine that reviewed a single we had released and the review contained the comment that, "While we know nothing of this four-piece band from Tuscaloosa Alabama, having a bassist called The Veg is very cool!" They went on to say that they liked the record too, BTW.
I have plenty of other nicknames, but The Veg runs closest to who I am and where I've been. Of course one of those same friends back in the old days in Germany also at one point started calling me 'Dr. Autobahn.' Hmmmm, should I have gone with that instead?

But...while I presently think of cjack being the first letter of my first name and jack, there IS a story behind the cjack. Back in the '70s (right...you were born in 1983...) a friend who also rode BMWs and went to BMW rallies (she also used to write a column for the ON), noticed that I generally managed to escape getting a speck of dust on myself or my BMW. She took to calling me Clean Jack which became cjack. That was the first cjack of me.

From the time the kids were little until the time came for them to leave the nest, I spent years trying to find something that would fill the gap left by motorcycling. I went from one hobby to another, investing all my enthusiasm into each one hoping I wouldn't think about getting another bike. As I was leaving one hobby to start another, my wife tagged me with this user name and it stuck.
Eventually, after the kids were grown, she relented and resigned herself to me having a motorcycle. The bike I chose was a 1977 R100S (this was 2005) that needed a lot of work, which gave her a little relief. When I finally joined this organization, the user name just popped up before I realized I had typed it in.

First name is Brad, then I just added "dog". Kind of silly, really. I came up with it years ago in my first foray into online forums, which oddly enough, started with motorcycle forums.
I'm widely known as "Braddog", although I have a different handle on at least one other forum. Anyone that would pay attention to my location and signature would easily make the connection that I'm the same guy.

... my name, it chose me.
When I was a younger man, a co-worker would entertain himself by doing nothing more than addressing me as "Swen, Young Swen" over and over again. Later, other coworkers in other locations would spontaneously address me as "young Swen".
I'm rapidly approaching the point where the moniker transitions from vain to rediculous, but like my tires, it still has a few good miles on it yet.

I've seen threads such as this on other forums. It's always interesting to see what's behind a screen name/avatar.
Mine is simple. Like others many years ago I was confronted by the sudden need to develop a screen name online so I just combined my name and favorite hobby: B. Ricci & photography. Elsewhere (and in general) I use my real name: Ben_Ricci or on rare occasions Boxer_Ben (I ride a BMW boxer and my fun car is a Porsche).

535is
11-24-2008, 10:20 AM
I'm pretty transparent to anyone who knows old BMW cars. I am much more active and involved in BMW CCA (24 years now) and the cyber-community of MyE28.com. I'm on my fifth E28 (1982-'88 5 Series) and my fourth 535is ('87-'88 only). In most other cyber-groups, I use a variation of my actual name with or without spaces and punctuation (see my sig). For here, though, so no one gets the wrong idea, I'm more of a Car Guy than a Bike Guy ... although these old Airheads do tend to get to ya. ;)
It appears to me now that the RS is a lot like the 535is. I can drive lots of other cars, old and new, but when I slide into the sport seat of my 'is, I am instantly 'at home'. I am intimately familiar with every little mechanical quirk of these beasts and I can do field repairs on it as handily as most of the Airhead gurus do on their bikes. No other car in my life has felt as good for as long, so I will have a 535is to drive for as long as it is reasonably possible. Likewise, this 30-year-old RS fits me so well in a lot of the same ways, so I am unlikely to be changing to any other bike in the foreseeable future. Anyhow, here's the car ...

I would photograph, and collect as many types as I could when I was living on the black land priare ,in a a old farm house, and on the the south side on the porch I had over a hundred species of cacti when a old friend come to visit .And he said what up with you and cactus, I am going to start calling you cactus,it stuck.

Just out of high school I was doing I.T. work and my coworkers called me "Stick Boy" for similar reasons - I could eat anything and not put on weight. I also was 6' tall and only weighted 133lbs. HOLY CRAP! How do you hold up a bike on those legs??? :D
:ha
I didn't start riding until about 9 years after I graduated high school - after I added the weight. I never realized how skinny I was until I looked back at an old photo and it looked like I wasn't eating. The sad thing is what I was eating for lunch my senior year:
- hostess powdered donuts (6-pack)
- 2 bags of BBQ Krunchers potato chips
- bagel with cream cheese
- country time lemonade
- Add ice cream if it was soccer season
My parents still gave me good food at home, but then on weekends I'd be running around grabbing taco bell or something equally unhealthy. My metabolism was scary. When I rode to the James Bay after the '07 rally I dropped 10 pounds in 7 days. I was eating, but not having beer or soda. I should probably make that a permanent dietary change.

You think you got it bad, my wife's name is Tesla. She alway hears someone say somethiing about either him or the band. I get a kick out of it but I think its gotten old for her.
BTW, no, she's not named after either of them.

I used to work with a guy like that. Skinny little fella who would commonly eat a whole large pizza or 3 double-cheeseburgers for lunch and never put on any flab. I told him one day that he must have a tapeworm or something, and he found that so hilarious that whenever he got hungry he'd exclaim, "tapeworm's off da hook today!"
squiffynimrod
12-18-2008, 09:57 PM
Was suggested as an online name several years ago by a co-worker. I liked the way it rolled off the tongue. As quoted from the dictionary.com site-
squiffy: very drunk
nimrod: a person expert in or devoted to hunting.
Now I don't hunt, but I've been often seen hunting for a fine microbrew with a great cheeseburger as a chaser. So the name fits me.
We've called the wine making room and cellar in the basement "squiffycellars." That one rolls off the tongue too.

End of the day he says to me, you know you're Pretty Fast For an Old Guy , thus the screen name was born.
I have 3 adult son's that ride, and have done several track days with me, and even when they are on my CBR600F3 track bike, I am still faster than them on the Beemer. The deal is they cannot call me old until they are faster on the track.

My wife's name is Cindy and she owns a dance studio. The students, almost all girls, refer to their teachers by the title "Miss" followed by their first name. Hence, my wife is referred to as "Miss Cindy." Over 20 years ago I walked in and a little girl saw me and giggled, "You're Mr. Cindy." And it stuck. The girls at the studio, even the teachers, call me that, and I use it everywhere on the web. I never have to remember my username, and its never taken.

Uh, my full name is in my profile, so no "hiding". You all can probably connect the rest of the dots! ;)
I took "beemermyke" because the above Mike had already taken the name the way I spell it. DOH!:banghead (No hard feelings...)

I always found it weird that folks would choose their own nickname. I mean we'd all be "Stud" or "Princess", not "Stinky' or "Dickweed":jester.
So what's your name stranger?
Well, family calls me Percy, but some call me Bad News.
I'll call you Percy.
Well, ok.
Oddly enough, my user name was chosen by randomly selecting letters from a mason jar. Coincidence? Ask the Masons. (no, not cs&m)

What a kick to see a year old post revived and get a handle on people I often read as a fairly new poster!
BC is the province of Canada I live in. K are my preferred type of BMW bikes. Rider is just totally unimaginative.
Just too dumb to disguise my identity except for leaving off my last name.

8/30/14. August 30, 1914, the anniversary of the Prussian army victory at the Battle of St. Quentin. That sounds better than saying it's my MOA number and I can't figure out how to change it.

That sounds better than saying it's my MOA number and I can't figure out how to change it.When you first signed on to the forum, you had to give your MOA number to verify that you are a member. At that time, you had the opportunity to select a username. If you didn't, your MOA number became your username. NOW, to select a username, you must call the office in St. Louis to have them change it to what you want. Call 636 394-7277.
Hope this helps.

When renewing membership, after a lapse, I tried using my old username, joedabbs, but the program wouldn't let me do it...so I used the name a few of my ex-girlfriends had called me.

Pretty obvious for me too.
My BMW is an 88 R100 RT, and I was having a mental block as to a username, so I selected 88BMWJeff
Edit: Just realized I've passed the 1,000 post mark

geisterfahrer
01-21-2010, 04:57 PM
I started using geisterfahrer when I escaped from AOL and got a decent ISP. My old screen name was not available, so I chose to use a German word I had learned on Discovery. I had recently bought my VW, and thought it would be cool to have a German screen name. Now that I have my Beemer as well, I think it is even better. :thumb
I know the word does not have a good connotation in Germany, but no one knows that on the American sites I hang around on :wave
I put my first name and last initial in my sig, and my location in my profile. That's about all I am willing to divulge on a public forum, for the sake of security.
haughty
01-22-2010, 11:59 PM
uh its my last name with a Y in it, and it was in the dictionary. in the old days (like 40 years ago using a 20 year old dictionary) haughty meant naughty so, yeh I was naughty Haughty..I guess there wasnt that many words back then...
now the dictionary made it up to mean uppity, arrogant. Synonyms: assuming , cavalier *, conceited , contemptuous ... adjective: remote. Synonyms: above , apart , casual , but that aint me, .........

Mine is a ripoff from a license plate I read of in Sky & Telescope, ICM31. M31 of course is the Andromeda Galaxy, which is the furthest object visible to the naked eye at ~2 million light years. It was designated M31 because it was the 31st abnormality in the sky noted by 18th century comet hunter Charles Messier.
Although a city kid, I got an interest in astromony upon moving to dark rural Ontario 15 years ago. Celebrating our home in the total absence of light pollution, we see the Andromeda Galaxy!!
Its been a non work username from near the beginning of online for me..:type

I'm a tandem cycling super-enthusiast and it's been my nom deplume since I launched my tandem cycling information website (http://www.thetandemlink.com) a decade back on on most discussion forums since Feb '05. So, as far as 'hiding goes', a Google search on "TandemGeek" will usually land on me.

Like a number of others on this forum, mine dates back to my AOL days. Shawn and all the variations were gone so I used one that I had read of previously. Tired Of Looking For A Name, TOLFAN. Not original, but I liked it.

HuskyVarmit
02-20-2010, 09:20 PM
Husky Varmit comes from almost 6 decades of variations of being called a varmint. It was even my call sign back in the early 60's. It became solidified in '73 when I switched to riding Husqvarnas. It was even made into a logo based on the Tasmanian Devil whirlwind.
And, yes, there is still a Husky in the rotation - an '08 TE610. Sits right next to the classic K bike.
Besides, it has more panache than Bob.

Ever been to the Boston area? The freedomtrail is a self-guided walking route of historic places in a historic town. You can wander around town and explore some great places at your own pace. The name gives away where I am from. I think it evokes a sense adventure, patriotism and discovery. Corny.. but true

I always like the witty way folks spell out stuff on their vanity plates.
First R8 and 1st R8 are my tongue-in-cheek bragging about being First Rate in whatever I do.
I opted for FIRSTR8 over 1STR8 for clarity.
Likewise, my wife is SoulM8 for the same reason.
