Fun is subjective of course. I'm passing through these cities next week on my travels and I plan on spending 1 night in Shreveport and 1 night in Austin. Can anybody clue me in on those cities? I'm looking to stay in a nice (historic if possible) area that will give me a good feel for the city. Safe, comfortable, with good restaurants and coffee. Music venues are a bonus. Beer is good too. :)

Stay in the downtown area (Austin) and you have dozens of options within walking distance. The Stephen F. Austin and Driskill hotels are historic high-end choices. The Crowne Plaza might be more affordable. These should get you started.

No - it was Texas. :)
Now my plans have changed and I'll let my bike rest in Arknsas while I figure out my itinerary for January.

Austin- lots.
Shreveport- not much, unless you dig casinos. I know a good restaurant there though, in case you get hungry.
