Does anybody sell an aftermarket extended sidestand for a /5. Mine's too short. Need longer one. Length does matter........Thanks.

I have a brown sidestand, it works well but is round so may have to be careful about parking on soft asphalt pavement or dirt.

Only drawback is that since It mounts forward of the footpeg you lose a lot of room for your foot under the shift lever. I can barely get my foot under it.

Try a hockey puck on the end of a tether. Hockey pucks cost about $1.00 at a sporting goods store.

Here you go! (http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=855231)

Did you jack up the suspension so the bike leans over farther than it used to or do you just not like how far over the bike leans?

I believe there is a bushing in the sidestand (where it rotates on the frame) that can be renewed, this would take out the slop 35(?) years of wear has introduced to the assembly.

I have a GSPD and a 650 Dakar, both of which have hockey pucks bolted onto their respective sidestands, loaded up they leaned way too far over for my taste. A quick, cheap fix. I think the Brown's sidestand, the only aftermarket stand I can think of, was a way to get around the spring-return, not change the attitude of the bike at rest.

I replaced the bushing on my '83 R100T because it had about 2.5" of what I thought was slop and the bike leaned over so much it made me nervous. So, I never used it.

I bought a brass bushing for it at Bob's BMW. Its sort of a pain to get to at least on my bike. I had to remove the header pipe which was a real PIA because it has two crossover pipes, unlike the older bikes. So between loosening both sides, then trying to wrestle the complete exhaust assembly (without the mufflers), I finally removed the side stand. Turns out the bushing in there was a ball with a hole drilled in it. It didn't look worn, so I'm still a bit perplexed by it. Anyway, the new one has straight sides, a grove around the centers (for grease I think) and it made a huge difference. Now the sidestand works fine and the bike only leans enough to transfer the balance over to port.

It was worth it.

The /5 though '80 motorcycles do not use a bushing anywhere in the sidestand. A pin is welded in the frame and the sidestand is supposed to pivot on it. Many times this pin's weld breaks and the hole into which it is fitted becomes oval. This was properly attended to by installing a grease fitting in the later bikes, which you can also install in a /5 once the pin has been stabilised.

If yours has this problem, you can repair it by obtaining a replacement pin and welding it. Take the bike to a competent welder; he'll use an arc welder or TIG welder to weld it back in place.

An easier answer, if less elegant, is to remove the stock stand and install a Brown's stand.

i was looking into a browns side stand myself as I feel my bike doesn't have enough lean to it. I think my biggest complaint about the stock stand is it's all goofy throwing down the stand while on the bike by stretching yer leg wayyyyyy out but I have since developed my own formula and now I really don't notice it.
