Hi

I was curious to know what is the North American market share of BMW motorrad? I searched the net but all I could find out was buried in market research reports costing thousands of dollars. I am curious but not that much. lol

Any of you would know these stats?

Thanks in advance for your responses or lack thereof.

cheers

I forget the stats, but as a percentage of total bikes (2 wheeled motorized vehicles) sold it is miniscule. I do remember that Harley Davidson outsells BMW about 20 to 1. I noted not long ago that if BMW could manage a conquest sale for one out of 20 Harley buyers it would reduce Harley's sales by 5% and double BMW's sales.

The Motorcycle Industry Council figures are the ones generally used. Last time I checked I think their current report runs something like $200.00 and previous years $50.00 per year. Their numbers break out a variety of classes of bikes defined by displacement and other defining elements. You can back door the numbers a bit by looking at the Harley-Davidson annual report. BMW does not get broken out in everyone of their reports. The H-D numbers center on the big bike market which is defined as bikes larger than 651cc.

H-D’s 2007 annual report gives some market share information but does not break out BMW separately.

H-D – 48.0%
Honda – 14.3%
Suzuki – 12.7%
Yamaha – 9.2%
Kawasaki – 7.5%
Other – 8.3%

Their 2005 report was the last time they broke out BMW as a separate line item in the market share numbers.

H-D – 47.8%
Honda – 16.6%
Suzuki – 12.6%
Yamaha – 9.3%
Kawasaki – 6.9%
BMW – 2.3% – This has been fairly consistent in the numbers H-D publishes
Other – 8.3%

They also give numbers for Europe and this does break out BMW and they are interesting.

2007
Suzuki – 16.5%
BMW – 15.1%
Yamaha – 13.6%
Honda – 12.3%
Kawasaki – 11.3%
H-D – 9.6%
Triumph 6.5%
Other – 9.2%

2005
BMW – 17.7%
Yamaha – 15.8%
Suzuki – 13.3%
Honda – 13.0%
Kawasaki – 12.6%
H-D 8.9%
Ducati 5.2%
Triumph – 5.0%
Other – 8.5%

When I was researching BMW in 2005 for a possible purchase of the R1200RT (which I eventually did the following spring), I recall a dealer lamenting to me that Honda had reached the milestone of 1 million bikes produced in a single year.

He compared this to a total production run (that's ALL models) for BMW of 35,000, of which only 12,000 were imported to the United States.

Those numbers have since gone up, but we're still the 'little guy' in a big market.

Its all good if you look at it from the correct perspective. :idea

As BMW owners, we are not merely a minority, we are the elite :thumb

That thinking makes riding a HD as mundane as driving a Ford Escort. :laugh

Seriously though, I do not base my decision on what to ride on market shares. I don't really care if it is the most or least popular brand so long as the bike meets my needs. If that places me among a minority of bike owners, so be it. I'm just glad I am in a position to be able to purchase and maintain the bike that best suits my riding style.

From my experience and research, Owners of today's "modern" BMWs are not so much the elite, but more the eccentric. Which is carrying on the tradition created eons ago. :help We all need some sort of therapy, ours just comes on 2 wheels.

2005 BMW Motorrad – total production: 97,474 – US deliveries 12,803.

2007 BMW Motorrad – total production: 102,467 – US deliveries 12,094

These are the production numbers for the same years I posted. It has been some time since the total production figure was in the 35,000 range. 1992- 35,910. As the line-up expanded in the 90s so did sales the biggest jump coming after 2000.

Honda numbers get bandied about. The million figure was a big deal for them. The thing you have to be careful about when comparing in anyway is what makes up the number. The market segment BMW has competed in is defined by the 651cc and greater heavyweight. The big Honda number is total production Cub to Goldwing.

Thanks for your info.

I was checking the IBA ride finisher web site and found the following stats:

HD rider members: 11,631 (47% market share)
BMW rider members 9,065 (2,3% market share)

Now if we apply the market share of these brands it shows that it would take 18,524,130 HD riders to proportionally match the number of BMW IBA members !!!!!

or in a nutshell it takes 2043 HD riders to equal 1 BMW rider hahahahahahahah
