The world was different then
ATGATT meant leathers if you were a racer, jean jacket and corduroy pants if you were 5 year old kid
when my mom took this picture i wanted to wear dad's gold helmet because it was way cooler than my flat black helmet.
I remember "4 into 2", it made sense to a 5 year old's concept of math.
i remember holding onto my dad's harley davidson brand leather jacket because it felt more secure than the sissy bar, i'm sure it was emotional, not physical.
i can recall proving that my feet could be firmly planted on the passenger pegs, i knew i'd made it in.
i also think of how i teased my brother because his feet couldn't reach the pegs
i remember moving in 1987 and the bike going, along with other hobby items my dad had, the RC planes, the slot cars, etc, etc
i remember the joy on my dad's face in the spring of 2004 when he rode my airhead, it was his first time on a motorcycle in 17 years.

Reminds me of a Yamaha Heritage Special I had many moons ago.

70's ish, with the Moto-ski brand. Note the "springer" seat and pull-start.
By the way, if you're 7 and have one of these, avoid the temptation to take the starter recoil apart to see how it works... :doh

Well this was about 1966 and this was my first bike. It was a Benelli 50cc mini and never ran worth a darn , but it got me hooked.

These are great! I have to tell you all I had a big grin as I looked at these. Back when I was a punk (Derek, seriously, what year is that pic from? waaaay back in the 80's?) I had a mini frame with no engine mount, a plate for mounting that needed cutting and welding and an engine but it never came together.
Later in 1973 (ish) I would own a Yamaha 125 enduro then a serious lapse of time before I got the stones to go against my Mom's wishes (those things are dangerous) and purchase the 2000 ET4 that got me hooked again. You know the rest.
I think I would still pop for a Honda trail (pick a number) but iirc one of the series had a funky transmission sequence, like one up and three down or something bassackwards like that.
No disrespect Bubba, I have to tell you I have a serious bad cold (worst I've had in years and due to the economic sitchiation I've had to resort to medication from the liquor cabinet). It really doesn't do a darned thing for the cold but after a few one doesn't care! :bottle

1985. Let's see that was 23 years ago. At that point one gets to an age where you stop listening to radio and one's fashion sense freezes. Do me this, in 25 years have a young whippersnapper like you jump up in your face and say "Grampaw, what were you listening to back in 2008"?! :stick
I do miss the mini's and the mini-trails. Thank you Lords of the two wheels for my Vespa. Seriously though I'd buy a decent used mini trail in a heartbeat.
YES I COULD STILL MOUNT ONE WITHOUT OVERLOAD!

A friend and I bought our rat mopeds in Montpellier, France, then we played hooky for a week from our semester abroad group, and rode to Barcelona and back. We pedaled all the way up to the Port d'Envalira above Andorra. The posted altitude is in meters. It's on a frequent route for moto tours of the Pyrenees, so the next time I get there it will be on an R-bike. Our coaster brakes totally failed right away on our descent. As we wore out our shoes trying to avoid planting our faces into the scenery, we met lots of cops who thought we were the stupidest smugglers they saw all day, because we couldn't stop for yards. The cops rode R50s. I wanted one of my own, got it 2 years later, but that's another story, posted elsewhere.

This is pretty sad compared to the rest. Photo from August of '05 - almost two months after I got my first bike (I have bike photos, but this is the first with me in it). My neighbor who was helping with the scraping/painting of the house (for cash) snapped the photo.
Way back in my pre-ATGATT days. I had the good helmet, jacket, gloves, and some steel-toed work boots, but jeans were all I wore on my legs - khakis on work days. :uhoh

Re-post. My Lambretta 150 LD, circa 1963 ish. The PO was a torch and hammer guy, so the thing had no operating front brake, as the throttle was the front brake handle. You would operate it between index and middle finger.
http://rinty.smugmug.com/photos/237500248_ezrbR-M.jpg
I later traded it in on a Honda Sport 90, which led to a Honda 350 Street Scrambler, and then a Honda 750 - 4. You'd have to keep the early 750 on the pipe all the time, or the plugs would foul.
...the previous Highlander I bought...jaherbst
My first scooter was a Cushman Highlander, a real abomination of a machine. The rear brake would lock up for some reason, if it wasn't applied just right, and you'd have to take the whole assembly apart to free it up. I'm relieved to know someone else (sort of) who had one of these; I don't feel so bad now. :)

There isn't a photo of me, but my wife with out two brand new Honda mopeds that we bought in Edinburgh Scotland in 1971. Before this picture, we had crossed the French Alps on them. After leaving Spain, we stayed in Arles (Van Gogh's village) in southern France for three weeks. On our eventual return to southern England, both bikes needed repair service and the mechanics started explaining to us that bikes like this were not meant to travel from Scotland to southern England. We explained that we were on our return after having toured France, Spain, and were now going to London. First discovered BMWs on that trip being ridden by French Gendarmes. Swore I get one someday.

Dammit Derek, you had to start this thread and make me tear up the house trying to find the damn disc, only to eventually find it right here in the clutter on my desk. :laugh
Anyway, the year is 2001. I was 33, and had just spent the last eight months doing a total refurb of a 1985 K100RT that had been sorely neglected and spent the eighteen months prior to delivery parked uncovered under a tree (see A K100 In Need Of Love, BMWON, April 2007 I think?).
When I was 13 I had been a passenger on a bike belonging to a friend of my mom's, and I had also ridden a friend's mini-trail and rented a moped at the beach...but none of those experiences were ever photographed. So in 2001 I had a bike of my own and digital photograhy had been invented.
I had gotten it back together (except the fairing, which I was still repairing) and running, and the next day I tested it in the parking lot of the apartment complex where I was living:

You must remember that these were big 49cc machines; I think we were making almost 10 km/hr going up the Pyrenees, which certainly beat walking the 10 speed bikes that so many Yanks and Canucks were doing that we passed.
Shortly after we got the mopeds, we were in the Windermere Lake District. One of the foothills that we were travelling up disappeared into the clouds. I don't know if was because the bikes were still not broken in or what, but I had to push each bike the last mile, above the clouds. They just couldn't do it under their own steam. Fortunately at the summit was a pub that served an excellent meal and gave me a chance to get over the hike up the hill.

I'm riding up to DLI SF in 1988 to visit friends. I bought this bike in 1987 when I was at DLI in Monterey, CA. I rode it to San Angelo, TX (my first long ride) in 1988, and stored it for 2 years while I was in Korea. I picked it back up at home (Maple, WI) and rode it out to Monterey, CA...3 days and 2300 miles. Had a lot of fun on that bike.

Well ......
I remember that day even now. I had owned that moped maybe 2 days. I wanted to go riding - Sunday. My parents advised that I was going to go to church. So I dressed for church and rode my moped. Tactical compromise - strategic victory.
My motorcycle life and "real" life often conflicted like that. For most of my career I was a suit and tie guy during the daytime during the week. Somewhat greasy from wrenching a lot of the rest of the time.
One of my motorcycle acquaintances (rally rat) once arrived in town and showed up at my office. His immediate reaction was, "Boy, you clean up pretty good for a motorcycle guy."

http://beemertom.smugmug.com/photos/428645389_ZQDus-L.jpg
A couple of weeks later Dad took me and my brother to try flattrack racing. I loved the speed of flattrack. I even managed to win the mini beginner trophy dash at that first flattrack race. When we got home I told Dad that I was done with motocross. I only wanted to race flattrack. Which I did for the next 6 years.
This picture is around '80. It was a Yamaha 250 in a Trackmaster frame built by Rob Muzzy.

40 years ago, when i was 10 years old. This photo was taken in Houston at the site where the woodway square apts once stood. At the time, it was one of the largest apt complexes in the world with literally thousands of units, olympic swimming pool, and everything else an upscale community should have.
Dad was living there with my stepmother, and soon split up ( i was living with my bio mom and visiting) and they moved out. Several years later woodway square was the site of one of the largest apt fires ever. The wood shingles proved to be a bad choice, especially when one unit caught fire, and the winds a sustained 40 mph. It leveled the complex save for maybe a dozen units facing san felipe st, and they never rebuilt it. Dad had this suzi along with another half dozen, and a dozen mini bikes that we would truck down to surfside beach and rent them out by the hour. Alas, the first year was the last, because the Tx governors daughter rented a bike down there and fell and broke her clavicle. Shortly thereafter all beaches were declared public roadways, and bikes and people had to be licensed and helmeted.

It just so happens that my mom sent this to me today.. On the back is the year 1977. 31 years ago and my favorite Grateful Dead year... and that has something to do with my next statement
I know its my motorcycle cause i recognize the jacket, but i have no recollection of ever owning that bike.. It looks like a Suzuki 600 or something like that...

this was taken early April, 1979. Really should have gotten a shot of the bike at about 2 years earlier, when i first bought it, but i neglected to do so. this was my first bike, a 1965 TR6c 650 Tiger. it had seen better days. so had i, for that matter.

This is actually my third Bultaco. My first, a 175 Mercurio, was stolen after ten days of ownership.
The photo of the 200 Metralla was taken at Vaca Valley Raceway in April or May, 1968. I was 19 and invincible. Yes, that's hair behind the helmet. In case you're wondering, that's a Suzuki 500 cc 2-stroke behind me, and the truck belonged to Powell's Alameda Honda in Alameda, CA. They're long gone.

The '75's had the Thermos bottle instruments and tail light housing along with the spherical turn signals. I have owed 2 of them, still own a '75 and the '76 in the picture. Many of the '76 bikes were '75 models refitted with conventional styling. Bought the '76 new in the crate for $1000 !

1st bike owned was a 1974 Suzuki GT380 Put on about 17k on it in AZ, before trading it in for a VW Bug. Sad day.
http://www.tubarks.com/aurora/1974%20Suzuki%20GT380.JPG
Next was a 1977 Honda 750SS, not picture available for the bike at the moment, they are somewhere hidden in the house. Put on about 80k in 3 years riding mostly around Colorado, but been on 2 cross country rides.
Just in time, 1983 Venture Royal. Keep it for about 90k, family and kids won out for time being. Most of the miles in Utah, but I have been on both coast runs with it.

Convince myself in getting back in the saddle again, got a K100LT, so far in less than 2 years, put on about 33k, again mostly in Utah.
