View Full Version : K100 Gear Led Replacement On Tach?

Has anyone dug into the '85 K100 speedo cluster to try to replace the gear selector LED? Mine works but is cracked and half black (why does this happen, heat, vibration?). My thinking is that it could be replaced if you find the right connectors (are they soldered?) Just curious.

Thanks.

Not sure on how they are attached but would strongly suspect soldered and connected by ribbon wire.

Good Luck

Yes It can be removed. It just plugs in. I removed mine and cleaned the contacts and solved its erratic behavior. Harold in Ks

Do you recall the plugs (how many, what type?). My thinking is to locate a generic LED display from electronics sources and fabricate...

You know that CRS syndrome has set in since I had it apart, Last winter. I remember that it was obvious how it came apart and that I did think that it might be a generic electronic piece. There is an artical in the IBMWR.com on the clock You might get some infromation there. Harold in KS

Mine just started to go wonky on my last ride. An extra segment lights up now. So I'll try the clean the contacts trick foist, then maybe new LED.:dunno

They also sell gears...(approx 17.50 a piece - green, orange or clear)

Great resource...

It's been a while since this thread went around and I was wondering if anyone knows if the gear indicator LCD chip has a MFG part number listed on it? And if it is soldered to the circuit board or plugged into a socket?

I'm hoping to have some time in the near future to disassembly my instrument cluster to clean the clock contacts and repair/replace the gear LCD. I thought that if I could find a replacement LCD chip that I'd give it a go before ordering the complete shift indicator display from Palo Alto Speedometer.

Thanks in advance

Since I'm tearing everything down for painting, I also took apart the cluster.

Actually pretty easy job.

Do it someplace neat and clean and sitting down (i.e. kitchen table with good lighting.) The LCD is a small square wafer that fits inside a clear housing which is screwed in place). I believe mine cracked from heat as it is half black. Palo Alto Speedo sells the crystal for $28.

Only caveat is to take a lot of care taking the indicator needle off as it is VERY delicate. I bent mine slightly but have straightened it out.

I just got an e-mail from them quoting $39.99 + shipping.:(

Is that for the replacement board with LCD chip or just the LCD chip by itself?

They had quoted $28. before Christmas
The chip is a wafer that slides into a clear plastic housing. The housing screws into a board attached to the tach.

Let me know if the price is chip only?

Their reply to me said,
"We have the gear shift indicators in stock for $39.99 + shipping. This is for a new LCD insert only."
I asked specifically about the chip, telling them I didn't need the board.

I replaced the Gear Indicator on my 1985 K100RS last July. At that time Palo Alto was quoting $25 + shipping for the LCD insert. Below is a copy of the email I got back when I querried them about availability. I would advise you to replace the insert and power up the unit to test it before putting the guage set back together and putting them in the case. It's pretty obvious that the printed on pads from the LCD display have to make contact with the electrical contacts in the socket but it's still possible to insert the display 180 degrees out. You'll just get incorrect segments lighting up if you install it backwards so you just flip it around. Also remember to put a towel or something soft on the tank when you're doing this, the tank paint didn't get scratched but I scratched the black face of the tach so light now bleeds through that scratch at night.

Note that Palo Alto also sells the display for the clock as well as the entire clock module. The clock LCD is replaced the same way as the gear indicator - both are a clear piece of glass with the contacts and LCD elements on them and just slip into a socket.

I also installed the LEDs for the guage lighting from [/URL] KBikeParts.com and tried to clean all the contacts between the lighting board and the guage boards and where the lamp sockets plug into the lighting board to keep the guages working and lamps lighting. The LED lamps give adequate lighting and don't have filaments to break. Of course these LEDs are polarity sensitive so you need to power up and test to ensure you don't have the LEDs in backwards or they won't light. Although they tried to mark the + side of each LED, it was not always easy to see the marking.

I am sorry but all that we have left for the gear indicators are the LCD inserts. When the numbers lose segments, or the display goes black the LCD will fix this problem. The LCD insert runs $25.00 + shipping. We have no complete new or rebuilt shift indicators boards left. Sorry that we were not able to give you a better answer. "

In response to my question and for updated pricing information.

There are no MFG part numbers on the replacement gear indicator LCD. It is a simple unmarked LCD wafer that slides into the plastic housing mounted to the shift indicator board. The LCD connects to the board with small carbon connectors.

Note: There are some MFG numbers on the clock LCD, but I've haven't attempted to locate parts with them. The numbers are D038022-R022 4L6.

The pricing from Palo Alto at the time of this post in $35.00 + shipping for the LCD.

As an additional note, I have seen information elsewhere that indicates that it is necessary to remove the tach needle and face plate in order to replace the gear indicator. This was not the case for my 85K100RT. There are two screws that go through the back of the assembly that hold a "spacer/bracket" that the gear indicator board is mounted too. Once these screws are removed, the bracket and board can be slid out without removing the faceplate.

Hope this helps,
Monte

1992 K1100LT; gear indicator jumps around mostly when temperatures are hotter. In the Fall it's just fine but now, as I head out to the RA, the wamer temps seem to promote this indicator jumping. Won't keep me from going anyware but I would like to fix this. I seem to recall comments regarding the cleaning of the elec. contacts. Anyway, any help would be appreciated. If switch (whatever) then where is this located. Thanks, Bob

The switch is located on the back of the transmission behind the swing arm. My lcd would only read 5 for first and then kick in again at 3,4,5 correctly. The neutral light would not illuminate and the clutch needed to be pulled to start it. I took the switch mechanism apart and the part went all over the place like the IBMWR article promised they would.

Not sure if your problem has anything to do with the switch, but you may as well fool with it the next time you do a spline lube, since you are 98% of the way there anyway.

Or if you mean clean the contacts on the LCD then you're probably looking at 10 minutes worth of taking the cluster apart.

Good luck!
