Speedo cable attches to...?

To what does my speedo cable attach at the non-speedometer end?

Is it just too ridiculous to think that this vibration in the footpegs is somehow related to the fact the the speedometer/odometer stopped working at the same time the vibration appeared?

It mates with a small slot in a drive gear at the back of the transmission - the end of the cable is retained by a groove around its circumference and interference with the extended nose of the hollow bolt that holds the battery ground cable on. Do you still have the ground cable attached with the bolt ? Maybe something has failed or started to fail if your cable came out of its own or appears to be broken off. It could be coincidental, but it doesn't HAVE to be.
