This is one of the "earmarks" of the TARP bill (the $700 Billion bailout):
The Energy Improvement and Extension
Act of 2008
September 17, 2008
III. Transportation & Domestic Fuel Security
Bicycle Commuters. The bill allows employers to provide employees who commute to work by bicycle limited fringe benefits to offset the costs of such commuting ( e.g.,storage). The estimated cost of this proposal is $10 million over 10 years.

For you who live within a couple of miles of work - here is your answer to the high cost of fuel. I understand the payout is supposed to be $20 per week. Any takers?

As soon as they figure out how to measure the methane and CO produced by "bi-cyclists" their cost for 'carbon footprint' will make up the tax loss.

Obviously you don't have friends in high places... but I agree with the sentiment. How did the AMA miss this opportunity?
The first iteration (that failed) was $700 Billion. The (porkier) one that passed was closer to $850 Billion.

Just so. The "earmarks" of course added the additional $150 Billion. Just a little loose change, yes?

Let's not forget the new proposed spending to bail out the auto industry...........I guess if I build a huge corporation, pay myself and my friends tons of money, give myself and top share holders free trips and bonuses, sign on to union wages at 3 times the average hourly worker's rate, with healthcare for life, I would then be eligible for billions from the rest of you tax payers. Am I the only one who thought we were in America?

Ummmmm yeah, about that. Yeah, you're going to have to stop riding your motorcycle. See, the problem is the EMISSIONS. If it were about using less fossil fuel, diesels would be everywhere around here just like in Europe. That's not it at all. Ok, well, that's not it THIS time. It's emissions. But please ignore the whole plug-in hybrid thing ok? I mean, I know that we'll have to charge up those baddies with electricity generated by coal but don't worry. Coal has the same stigma that goes with diesels. We're going to make it uber expensive to burn coal but that'll be ok. I'm really sorry. But please stop riding your motorcycle. It's for the greater good you know. What's best for the village and all that. Good.
Now that we're past that, who's up for some Parcheesi?

This sure looks and smells like a political issue thread.
I'd say it sure has potential, but it doesn't look to me like anyone has even approached that line (yet.)
By the way, it is the discussion of or involving politics, not "political issues" (which could be anything from speed limits in Montana to mandated motorcycle airbag suits...)

And discussed quite civilly I might add. Well done.
