I'm looking at a 1983 R100rs. The current owner says the odometer works fine but the Speedo doesn't work due to a broken needle. Does this sound normal or does this warrant further investigation? If so, what else should I ask?

Thanks

Bottom line up front, I wouldn't pass on an other wise nice RS just because the speedo was broke. Three of four of my airheads have had speedo problems, they seem to have this malaise. My problems were with internal gear wear, dirt and misalignment. A couple were fixed by cleaning and re greasing. One had to be sent out. Never heard of a broke needle being a cause, but the owneer may not know what the real problem is, he just sees the needle not working. The Airhead site has an article on taking the instrament clsuter apart to work on the speedo, I don't have my regular computer in front of me right now so I can't give an exact URL. There are a couple of places to send speeds to, Palo Alto Speedometer ihn Calif, www.paspeedo.com and one in Texas near Austin, I don't recall the name. Both seem to have good reports. Good luck with the RS.

Sure, the odometer could work and not the speedo it something was wrong with the needle.

I had the opposite problem on mine.

Speedo worked but odo didn't.
