View Full Version : Economic Unrest
FWIW -
Economic hard times serve as the breeding ground for civil unrest, as taught to us by world history.
As we free fall into a worldwide recession, remember that the United States will be least affected by the accelerating downturn in employment and drop in standard of living.
For example, this week's edict, from Russia to their internal security types, proves to be eye opening:

P.S. If you don't believe the dire nature of my concerns, the latest news release on the impending collapse of General Motors should wake you up.

Specifically, GM officially projects running out of operating cash in less than six weeks!
Furthermore, Ford's financial straights look just as glum:

:ha :ha :ha :ha :ha :ha :ha :ha :ha :ha :ha :ha ROTFLMAO
Putting these things into clear perspective, Toyota currently has 40 times the market capitalization of GM.
Sadly said another way, Toyota's worth $105.0B, while GM's only worth $2.5B.
J.K. :wow
P.S. Ford's only worth $4.5B, for those that care, while Honda's worth $42.0B.

Remind me how this post is not political, interesting as may, or may not be, each to their own, but political all the same. Isn't that a criteria under-which a visit to the pound is secured?
Even if it warrants a pooch prison parole, it should at least be recognised as a continuation of the "Mother" thread and not a child thread, born out of wedlock (just love the 'lock' part of wedlock don't you?).

Not to skirt the issue, or hide behind the habit of Mother Theresa, but a matronly apron string sometimes require severing, no matter how firmly attached you may claw and cling to it. Simply said, severing the cord reduces discord, especially when seeking the overall harmony of the lost cord.
To hammer home the point more succinctly, an ounce/gram of prevention is not worth a pound/quid/kilo of cure, when attempting to close lids on coffins of topics that refuse to die.
Finally, no matter how slyly you attempt to conceal, choke, or cloke it, shrouding issues with wet blankets send the wrong smoke signals, if the purpose of the Forum is to encourage fraternal debate and discussion.
JMHO
J.K. :wow
P.S. And while there's smoke being generated, we need to examine and exhaust the real reasons why this organization's engine is so frequently being rattled.
Clearly, opportunity knocks increasingly louder, each and every time you seek to bar the door. And it's more than a matter of timing, or the combustible mixture/spark of fuel, oil, and hot air.

And what brand of motorcycles are we riding?
I've always been happy with my Ford produced products (assembled in the USA at the Twin Cities Assembly plant), but the problem is Ford doesn't make a motorcycle, so I got myself a BMW. :)
Actually, you CAN get a motorcycle powered by a vintage flathead Ford V8, but it's hardly practical. Try 110 mile fuel range, hard-tail, and direct drive (no gears, just a clutch to get moving).
What were we talking about again? I always get sidetracked and talk about motorcycles on here... :p

This is makes some sense:
GM, Ford, Honda, Chrysler, Nissan, and Toyota all developed electric vehicle programs in response to California’s zero emission mandate—and most ended up crushing at least part of their EV fleets. Even as the automakers launched their EV programs, they undermined their success every step of the way. Why?
Electric cars are a threat to the profitability of the conventional gas-powered auto industry. GM said that it spent more than $1 billion to market and develop the EV1. Not only would a successful electric car program cannibalize sales of conventional cars, but the electric car costs the auto industry in other ways: lacking an engine, it saves the driver the cost of replacement parts, motor oil, filters, and spark plugs. The EV1’s regenerative braking system, in which the car’s electronic controls handled much of the work of slowing down the car, spared the car’s mechanical brake system from wear. Brake parts and repair is a billion-plus dollar industry alone. The EV1’s efficiency was a winner for consumers but a loser for the auto industry.
When GM introduced the EV1, it was years ahead of American and Japanese competition in electric car technology. In the coming years it could have capitalized on its lead by developing these cars and advanced hybrids. Instead GM and other US carmakers would focus on battling with the State of California to kill electric vehicles. The consequences of these decisions reverberate today.

I won't mask it.

Let me see here..
1. Flaming/personal attacks. Just don’t do it. Clever quips and snappy retorts are part of any conversation; we mean the ill-intended, vicious personal attack.
See #4
2. Vulgar language, photos or links. You know what we mean – if it is something you wouldn’t want your significant other, grandparents, children, judge, boss or prospective employer looking over your shoulder to see, don’t write, show it or link to it. And remember that something you write in the privacy of our home is now available for the whole world to see.
3 Trolling. Trolling is intentionally baiting members by posting inflammatory subject matter, then arguing just for "fun." Moderators will use their judgment and if they observe trolling will handle it with warnings, suspensions, etc as laid out in the "Concerns and Complaints" section.
JK is the classic troll. Posting just on the edge of acceptable content, waiting for someone else to doghouse his thread, so he can give us the "who, me?" routine.
4. Creating a hostile environment. Our membership is a diverse community in terms of race, gender, and religion. Items offensive to, or that create an unfriendly environment for various people will be removed by the moderators with an explanation.
Anyone who responds to JK, even if in agreement, is talked down to and given "clever" little nick-names.
5. SPAM. Creating posts consisting solely of advertisements, links, or other commercial content is prohibited, and will either be doghoused or removed by a moderator without any explanation required.
Most of JK's ever-so "enlightened" and "helpful" posts are primarily links to other sites, with a few of his signature smilies inserted. Not to mention that it's all the same content again and again. I find it hard to imagine that we need enlightenment when the content he is posting is typically from websites that are exponentially more popular than this one. Let alone all over the TV that he seems to love and tell us all about.
1. Religion and abortion
2. Politics
3. Handguns
JK's edited his first link in this thread. Before that, there would have been no doubt about political content.

Alas the I'm being persecuted routine is not warranted. I'm not a fan, but feel you can be relied upon, every now and again, to make a valid point.
I see that this is a logical extension of the Mother thread, only time being the differentiator, not topic.
Which is why the Brits thread keeps going, same topic, just the time changes and why there's not a new thread for every subset of Britishness that arises, during the passing of time.
If there were a whole thread called Economic Debate, then that would be ideal, for your purposes and mine. Perhaps that would be a neat solution.
Without question, the current financial situation is one of political machinations and a thread on the topic could therefore be construed as doghouse-able, if the Mods so deemed it. But as the Mods point out, you seem to skirt the pound neatly, the Mods should also note that anyone requesting a thread be pounded, have the same rights to ask and shouldn't be dismissed with a, dont like it, dont read it, message in my humble opinion.

With Ford touching $1.80 and GM touching $3.02 a share, bankruptcy is no longer a matter of if, but only a matter of when.
The answer to the question of "why?" is quite simple.
Succinctly stated, why focus and funnel capital improvements and investment into a manufacturing sector that has a historical return on investment of 15 to 20%, at best, when speculating on financial instruments and investments allows you to leverage a 30 to 40% return on investment, with much less risk and managerial effort/oversight (until the recent sub-prime meltdown)?
An even shorter answer is, that as a society, America just got lazy.

Americans ! North Americans ? Central Americans ? South Americans ? Canadians ? Native Americans ? US Citizens ? Those on American payrolls ?
What does one mean when they say Americans ?
Are Brits just English ?
I thought that the inference that they were US military was clear. Obviously I was being too undercover for my own good.
It did appear that they (US Military personnel) were still confined to "camp" even when let off the base. Just wondered how much a bike ride around, through and across, was in any way similar to a fly in, stay on base, mix with fellow compatriots, then fly out?
From what I saw there's as much validity in comparing chalk with cheese.
What's in my wallet?
Which wallet would that be, the real wallet, the dummy wallet, or the dummy dummy wallet?
The chain was an aberration, brought about due to a need to get internet access and a laundry and also because it turned dark and having ridden through a city for three hours and only spotting a Marriot, the idea that local hotels may be near the airport took me down a one way route, where the locals had yet to develop anything...and I had to boil wash everything to clear the little critters from my clothes that had infested my bag when I stayed in a $10 dive the night before.
