View Full Version : The gig is up today

I have had a great week of riding, two days of great weather, averaging about 125 miles a day, and two back and fourth to work days, 80+ miles all on the old familiar route.
But this morning the snow has arrived, falling lightly all over the deck furniture that I forgot to put away-maybe forgot to put away to fend off this exact moment. Now coated in white, it is the omen I have dreaded for a couple of weeks now. Gently falling, not rushing by in a whoosh of wind; this is not a good sign that she, the white goddess of the north will leave any time soon.
It's into the Subaru for me today, and let’s hope for a late season warm up before doing the final maintenance, doing the final wash, scrubbing behind those big old GS ears, polishing the deep blue, rubbing the sweet chome here and there into a sweet luster, then putting her to bed for the season.
The gig is up today, I do believe......

The jig is not yet up here in Eastern Ontario:ca. Today promises 60 degrees and sunny - no electric vest. I'm off today and plan to ride.
The Winter is coming though, next week looks like the start of a nosedive in temperature.

I too did my last riding over the weekend and the final wash Wednesday. The tank is full, but I didn't have the heart to put in the StaBil, put on the charger, and cover it yet. The weekend looks bad, but if I get another warm day next week...

No snow here on the Wet Coast. Our Palm trees are doing well, though a bit soggy today.
Not all parts of Canada are the same. Our West coast is getting heavy rain right now, but if you go 100KM inland, they are getting snow. We need the snow so that our many ski areas can charge huge bucks to allow people to attempt to kill them selves on the hills or go out of bounds and get lost.
Now where did I put down that Pina colada? :rocker :ca

No thanks, Paul. The forecast for the next 5-6 days is still looking good for riding to work. We (the few that are still riding) don't want to see any snow/ice on the roads for a while yet.

I was going to ride into work today, but there was a rain/snow mix falling around midnight last night. This morning it was mostly dry but I was concerned about small patches of ice. For the most part things were fine aside from a few small puddles in the parking lot at work, but I DID see some ice off to the side of the road on an overpass.
I was listening to a Detroit radio station this morning (50 miles north) and it's apparently pandemonium up there - roads closed due to ice, huge amounts of accidents blocking other roads/highways, etc. The radio people said "it's going to take you forever to get anywhere this morning". Glad I'm down here. Looks like it's time to start thinking about making those upgrades to the PD.

I heard the mid-west got hit by a real big one. It went up as far as Manitoba.

It killin' me.
Winter is here!
Not enough miles this year, Blasted Final Drive robbed me of 5K at least! Missing the bike, and it's not even officially put away yet!!!
Well, I'll get in a putt or two yet before the roads become too icy... Love that electric jacket liner...
My buddy in Georgia will soon start emailing me about his daily rides....:brow

Thanks! Well, it was in the 60s last weekend (no pix yet, still in camera) so the color of the trees and grass was back... I spent most of Saturday clearing out and cutting up about three dozen or so tree limbs that couldn't take the weight of all that heavy, wet snow (we had @ 12").
In Bovina, NY, about 12 miles northeast of me, they had 20+ inches and lost 100s of trees and power to homes... The freak storm of October 08!

Last week I was able to get two days of riding in to-from work. If it weren't for meetings, I would have gotten more in. Tomorrow, a friend of mine and I have the day off (Vet day) and we are riding to the Blue Ridge Parkway for the day. It is slated to be in the fifties, probably high forties but that is still very acceptable riding weather.
I remember well the snow in Pennsylvania where I grew up and the New England snows when I was in college. It makes me just have to add, I love living in the South.
I hope everyone gets an "Indian Summer" as I grew up knowing it (the warm up before Thanksgiving) so that they can get in some more riding.

We had about a foot of snow a couple of weeks ago. The stuff has melted and I have ridden but temperatures are hovering just above freezing. Riding season however is coming to a close around here.
