I'm looking for a more interesting route from the LA area to Spokane....My plan is a midweek trip, two days max., and I'd like to avoid going freeway all the way.

Any thoughts?? Can I get there going 395/95 mid-week in 2 days??

Any thoughts would be appreciated...

395 from LA to Spokane would be a great ride. About 1200 miles, you could stop in Alturas at 600 miles. Nice little Itilian place on main street for dinner. There is a couple of quality flea bag motels in town on the north side as you head out. If you eat breakfast have it at Black Bear Dinner, there is nothing, I mean nothing in Lakeview, your next stop for food is Burns. Not bad pizza in John Day, it is a take out, but there is a cool park right behind the pizza parlor, sorry don't remember the name.
Have fun,
John

395 all the way to Spokane is do-able. I am taking that way home to Marina del Rey. Spokane to Reno is 500 and Reno to LA is 500 miles.

I am doing a Saddle Sore 1000 to Olympia, WA in 17 hours or less straight up the 5 at night. Always a good time.

Actually, 395 from Reno to Spokane is more like 800 miles of mostly high desert 2-lane blacktop and limited fuel stops along the way. Expect daytime temps in the high 90's.

Jim, we're gonna beat you out of town by a couple days (leaving Sunday) but would welcome the company on the return. Plan to leave the Rally Sunday, overnight in Redding, and get back here to San Juan Cap Monday afternoon. We're staying at the Residence Inn in Spokane, just a mile from the fairgrounds, leave us a message if you don't see us by Friday (we plan to arrive Thursday afternoon after noodling around in N Cal and Or on the way up).

Jim, sorry we missed you - we were there Thurs, Fri and then bugged out early Sat, around noon, to break up the trip home. Got back at 7 tonight after having a flat tire on Carole's bike this morning in Redding. Delayed us about 5 hours, but met a nice couple from the BMW Anonymous book who helped us get to a honda dealer and get the tire changed. Hope you enjoyed the rally - we sure enjoyed the ride up and back, 3k miles, Carole has become a real mileage animal. Her motto now is, "Fill 'er up, ride 'til it's empty, fill 'er up again and keep riding!"

Talk to you soon.

Phil, the ride up 395 was great 750+ the first day to Lakeview, OR and something like 550 miles the second day. the trip back on the 5 from Portland to the
Bay area was pretty tast traveling...but my trip around the Bay area from around 6:30 to 8:30 was one Hell of a ride....the local traffic was running around 90+ mph ( GPS speed) and we continued like this for 60+ miles...and occasionally a guy would go by at 100+ weaving through the rest of us doing 90!! have the speed limits in the East Bay area gone away completely??

I like to go pretty fast, but these roads were pretty bumpy and twisted, and it was a bit beyond sensible, but I will go with the local rate of travel rather than be a slow moving object...

All and all a great trip...thanks for the advice...
