I'm just about to start a "restoration" of my son's "standard" 1978 R100/7. The bike is in pretty good shape from what I can tell in one ride from Austin to my home in San Antonio. I have restored bikes in the past but it's been several years. My plan is to go with a cafe look and I plan to do a first rate job in my son's memory who died in a motorcycle accident in Austin last month. Call it therapy, I guess.
To the Texas members (and those in other states who can highly recommend a good shop), I am looking for names of businesses who do first class work. I need the following done:
1. engine rebuilt
2. some bead blast/paint strip work
3. powder coating work
4. painting.
For instance, what about Bob's BMW for the engine work?
I appreciate any recommendations of shops you are familiar with and location (address and telephone number if you have it).
Thanks in advance,
John Westcott

john,
im very sorry to hear about your son. your project sounds like an excellent one. have you called the folks at lone star bmw here in austin? theyd be a good place to start. there's a fellow here in town, paul zabor, who has a shop on burnet road. its a little place. he's a good guy. i dont think he is into restorations, but he might have some good leads for you.
take care and keep us posted with updates on the project?
John,
Mikey Orlaff has had his own shop since 1990. He is in Martindale (4 miles east of San Marcos just off Hwy 80). His phone number is 512-357-2842. When Alamo BMW couldn't help with my airhead they sent me to him. He has an excellent machinist (also in San Marcos area) that he uses for head-work. The machinist is Glenn and he owns Premier Custom Cycles in SM. I have been a customer of both, and am satisfied. Mikey has a website at martindalemotorcycleworks.com the site has pics of some of his work. Good Luck and I'll see you on the road. Several airheads gather at the Cafe on the Square on LBJ st. in San Marcos on the first Friday of every month. Maybe not this month, being a holiday and all, but usually every other month. If you need help getting your bike to Martindale, or need better directions let me know kadesean@yahoo.com

Perry's in Fort Worth is excellent. If I lived in San Antonio, I wouldn't mind driving to Fort Worth for a large job. He is top notch, and he was *the* BMW dealer in Fort Worth for several decades.

Boxers by Bruce in the DFW area.

A coworker of mine recently had a rather bad experience with Boxers By Bruce. It seems that Bruce has no answering machine or voicemail, and my colleague's bike left the shop with more things wrong with it than when it went in. That and one of his pristine engine bars had been replaced by a not-so-good one. I've noticed that Bruce doesn't run as many ads as he used to either...

Thanks to everyone for the tips on shops/vendors in the central Texas area. I'm looking forward to my R100/7 "cafe racer" project. My plan is to have fun riding the bike this summer (which will allow me to evaluate everything that needs repairing or replacing) while ordering the parts I will need and deciding which shops to use for those things I am contracting out (powder coating, painting, head work, etc.) I want to start and finish everything during the winter.
