I just traded my 2002 RT-P (no cash involved) for a 2004 GS, LOVE IT! Don't know what took me so long to take a ride on a GS!

Sounds like a good deal to me. I am glad you like it. Give us pictures to look at (Both Bikes).

Great Pictures. That blue with the white tank accents is cool.:thumb

Are you going to get the aluminum cases for it?

The standard hard cases that came with it will be fine.

I have a red one. But I have to say...that blue/white color scheme they did is the best they have ever done. I was looking for a blue/white one when I was shopping for my GS. Wasn't patient and ended up jumping on the red one. Glad I did. Love my bike. It is my 3rd BMW. Ever since I got it, I don't look through the for sale ads much anymore. Just settled down with her for the long run.

Best of luck with your new ride. Welcome HOME :thumb

Nice. Looks real nice in Blue.
Getting tired of seeing Tonka Toy Yellow or Fire Twuck Red...

That's why I'm avoiding a test ride! After a variety of bikes over the last 40 years or so, think I'll just keep putting mile on my 11S. One of my buddies moved to a GS several years ago and never looked back. He was a pretty extreme rider, Suzuki RG500 Gamma among other tasty bikes, and had raced at Isle of Mann. If he found the GS so appealing I'm sure I'd have NO chance of resisting. My banker might resist though!

Cheers, BJ

I hear ya, Bill. I was just thinking of a GS when I arranged to ride a friends GS on a little jaunt. At the time I was riding a 04 1150RT. I promptly traded it in, got the GS, and couldn't be happier. The fun factor went up 10 fold, and I twist down lots of gravel roads riding around the area in western ND. I'd buy another GS in a heartbeat.

I'm curious to know why you wanted to trade the rt-p - I'm riding an r1150r and like it a lot, but when the temp is in the 30's like this morning, or I'm doing a long ride, I sometimes wish for a fairing, and the rt-p seems like a pretty cool bike.

This 2002 RT-P rider is curious to find out why you ditched your 2002 RT-P in favor of a GS :)

Rich,
If I still lived in Northern Nevada I'd probably jump on a GS, in my formative motorcycle years I rode thousands of miles on desert roads on a 305 Scrambler. You know, the ones with the "long travel" suspension, 2.34834" stroke on the forks, 1.24953" stroke on the swingarm. But in Western Washington publicly accessible off road areas are sort of few and far between so it's sort of a challenge to find those roads. At my age think I'd probably be prone to falling down a lot on dirt tracks too!

So, I'll just avoid the issue by not taking a test ride, even though my favorite sales guy keeps trying to talk me into it! Guess, I'll just try to find some way to enjoy my 11S bike and be happy...

Ciao! Bill J

I was sort of getting off track and didn't mean to hijack your thread. But back on subject, that's a great looking GS, my favorite color scheme for that machine.

Congratulations!

Cheers! Bill J

In the end, I just like lighter bikes. The RT-P was great on the road, but too much of a handful in the garage, I was going to have to spend money on an aftermarket windshield and saddle, I never figured out a good way to pack camping stuff onto the radio trunk...it just wasn't my bike.

I hear you about that radio trunk. I know a guy who customizes bikes for Iron Butt type rallies, and he's always trying to talk me into letting him put an auxiliary fuel cell in there or under the floor of the radio box. As it is, it's just a glorified glove box. Since the regular radio/glove box is filled with a battery on an RT-P, I guess we need some place to keep our registration, proof of insurance, tool kit, Anonymous book, etc., but it's not a perfect use of space.

I'm planning on riding to Alaska next summer, and I've literally spent hours thinking about where everything is going to get stored on the bike. I wish the radio box had a rack on top of the lid, but who knows how much weight the plastic would support. I doubt very much before it would sag and deform.

Good luck with the new ride!
