View Full Version : Computer DTE

When I fill my F800GS fuel tank, I reset the trip odometer to zero. After several hundred yards, the DTE (distance to empty, I presume) display reads 130 miles until empty. I go 50 miles, and DTE says 136 miles. I go 100 miles, and DTE is 140 miles. Isn't that grand?
Has anyone sought recalibration of their computer or fuel tank sensor in an F800GS/F650GS (twin) yet? (This was an issue with hexheads and the strip-style sensor, but not with such gross error in DTE calculation).

Hi Fred, mine does about the same but there are little "greater than" hash marks displayed. As it is I am getting only about 45 mpg, so much for the 50-60 I have been hearing about.
Worse than that, the LCD segment in my 6 for sixth gear occasionally goes out leaving a 5 where there was a 6. I was riding home from San Francisco the other night and looked down, saw the 5 and tried to upshift to 6, but was already in 6.
My R1200R is at A & S getting the ews ring and the brake recall so maybe I will swap them out, hopefully I will be ready for the 600 mile service when I am picking up the R.

I have 2009 F650GS and the fuel sensor does the same. When you fill the tank up it reports the greater than mileage at your current fuel consumption. It only changes to the miles to empty after you burn off about 2 gallons. Then miles to empty is also calculated by your current consumption. It seems to work really well it just doesn't regester until the tank is at the last two gallons.
I complained about this Distance to Empty function from about 2 months after I bought my F800S to the day I returned it a year and half later for its no-go/lock up feature. The dealer replaced the fuel strip (integrated with fuel pump), the ZFE, and updated the firmware on the bike over and over. It never worked accurately. BTW, my friend's K bike has one that works.

If all else fails, read the instructions. I am curious to see if that is the scenario BMW spells out in the owner's manual.

Fred,
Check the manual on page 45 regarding the range. It says that " with a full tank, the exact volume cannot be determined exactly. In this area a minimum range is indicated, marked with a > symbol." I have, from experience found that it is about 2 gal. left when the actual mileage is indicated. I expect it is the irregular shape of the top of the tank than doesn't allow a linear gauge to work correctly and the solution was to start measuring when the fuel was at a level which could be measured by a linear sensor.

Thank you. In that case, I will not pester my dealer about it. :nono (The computer of my hexhead spoils me; it gives me the specific DTE from each fill-up.)
