Morning ; We put on a 1030 techlusion on our R 1100 R 1996 for the Surge problem.
We had done a very fine tune up , adj valves, sync the tbs with the twin max and new plugs that are reccomended . The bike ran quite well except still surged.
We were particularly careful with valve settings also.
Now when we installed the 1030 the Surge went away :bolt But when we took it for a long test ride, about 80 mi. I noticed a vibration in the bike like the out of sync vibration.
When I put the twin max back on the bike it was out of sync after installing the techlusion.
Here is the wierd part we need help with. When we synced the tbs and got the twin max back where it was in the center the cables readjusted a bit and the BBSs to where it centered the needle on the twin max, the bike seems to run good but the BBS s are not right to my opinion.
We had to adj the BBS for sync where one is in all the way and out a turn and a half or so and the other only back out like three quarters a turn. They are like a 3/4 turn different??????????? My logic which is failing in old age of 57 still says this is WRONG.??????? Can someone tell me maybe where I screwed up .
The bike is running ok and the twin max is centered both at the idol and just above 3000.
The BBS s are new also.
Thanks
Jim and Esther

Jim/Esther:

I did some searching and note that your home, Cotopaxi, is at 6,500 ft asl. My home city is at 3,500 ft asl, and my 2002 oiler RS would start surging again just a few months after a professional tune. I sold the bike before installing the Techlusion, but my tech said he hadn't had much luck with them, locally. My bike would surge even in 5th gear.

Since the surging is a lean running condition, I have wondered whether some oilers driven at high altitudes are going to be difficult, if not impossible, to keep in surge free tune.

Sorry I can't answer your technical question, but someone here will have that for you.

Good luck

Well, bikes get richer at altitude - not leaner - so I have no idea.

We went back and set the BBS s and got them back to preset suggestion. Then we did the cables and sync from there . When done with getting everything ready to sync the sync went pretty good. Had the cable adj slightly and then one bbs just a hair and both are in the center of the twin max now. The bbs s are close to eachother now also.
I think what I had done was put tooo much slack in the first section of the throttle cable and it just transmitted the problem on down the line.
120 mile test drive this evening and all seems fine, no surge , not to much vibration all seem happy.
Thanks

Agreed, if fuel delivery is constant with increasing altitude. But isn't the Motronic unit going to lean out the fuel delivery as the bike gains altitude? And if the rates aren't matched properly, the high altitude could exacerbate the situation.

The reason I'm wondering, is that there seem to be some machines out there that can't be de - surged.:dunno

...all seems fine...Grumpyone

Good sleuthing.:thumb
