Hi All,
My new to me 16,000 mile '88K100RS-ABS has been causing more problems, and I'm once again glad to have access to this knowledge base. I washed the bike (it was filthy), dried it, waxed it. Rode off, and the ABS light was on. Checked connections, looked fine, light still on.

I brought it over to the local dealership here in Albany. Their computer readout said "Rear Speed Sensor", and they suggested that I replace the sensor. $80 part, $150 labor. From the looks of it, I can replace it myself with no problem. I told them i'd think about it.

Today I unplugged the sensor from the harness under the side cover and cleaned those contacts. I removed the sensor from the caliper assembly and cleaned off the grease that was on it. Replaced it. The clearances seem alright, with a .6MM feeler getting through the gap, sometimes with little resistance, sometimes with a lot of resistance, depending on how the wheel is turned.

I have a few questions. Should I just replace the sensor? Is that whats wrong? Anything else I should do before dropping money? Also, is this whole ABS-1 system total garbage? Should I be looking for a way to remove, replace with non-ABS and hock what's left (and working) on ebay before it blows?

Once again, thanks for everyone's help.

If you can find or have an Ohmmeter - measure the resistance of the sensor at the connector on the frame (disconnected from the harness.)

You can also read up on ABS-1 on the IBMWR K tech site. Lots of into there, including how to reset it. www.ibmwr.org - K-tech.

Thanks Don,
In your knowledgeable (seen your website) opinion, is this a system that is maintainable? Or am I riding a bimmer with a little bit of a lucas style nonsense in it?
Thanks again.

Andrew - given cubic $$ anything can be fixed. That said - I installed ABS-1 on a K bikes, and both another that had it installed by a prior owner - and both are still working just fine. I think the big killer of the ABS-1 brain is low system voltage, so keep your battery up and it should last just fine.

Courage instilled, I go back to work...Thanks!

So I went back to work...and I'm still puzzled.

Bought myself an analog multimeter, hooked it to middle pin on the blue connecter with the dummy plug on it. The needle dances (left/right, left/right, left/right, left/right) stops for a few seconds, and repeats. Fault 4, right?

Resistance between the two pins on the rear wheel speed sensor at the connection point under that same side panel is about 128. Resistance between pins 3 and 4 on the abs plug is 134.5. Pin 3 and pin 4, when connected with frame ground, make an open circuit.

My brain is fried. Is my ABS brain fried too?

Sorry for all the consecutive posts...but I FIXED IT!!!

Don't really understand it, but I did a hard reset (held the abs button for 1 min) on the computer. The result was the light staying on. Then I pulled the rear sensor again, which immediately brought up a code #4. Then, plugged in the rear sensor, and did a soft reset. My ABS lights are out. Hope they stay that way.

So, in conclusion, does anyone want to trade their non-abs k100rs for my abs bike?

Don, Thanks very much for your help...it was a bit daunting at first.

Andrew,

I went through a similar situation earlier this riding season. Drove me nuts.

Did the soft reset. Did the hard reset. Nothing, just flashing lights.

http://www.k11og.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4540&highlight=abs

Finally decided on the usual temporary fix- black tape over the two flashing lights- until I found out how to cleanly remove the ABS.

Then one day in a low light situation I noticed at the side of the black tape that it was no longer flashing. I was back to the ABS system working normally.

Has been working normally ever since. Who knows......."The more you overtake the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain"

These bikes are maybe too complex.

Good luck with yours.

So, I've had all the same problems with my ABS on my '92 k75s, now there are no ABS lights coming on at all except the rear brake light light (center on dash) blinks indefinitely. I unplugged the brain and the light blinks the same. Does this mean the brain is fried? Does anyone know a way to have the center light on the dash stop blinking besides the black tape trick? I apologize if my answer is in some tech article somewhere or on another post but my brain is racked from reading so deeply into this.

Thanks!
