My 94 R11RS does not have an RID and it has me wondering about engine temperatures.
How does one know what the engine temp is? In particular at what point do I get worried just iddling in traffic?
Is there an aftermarket temp sensor / gauge that can be added?

quite a few BMWs don't have RIDs (thus, no temp gauges), nor are they even offered- including the R1100S (my ride). Just use common sense- if you're sitting in hi temp conditions for more than a few minutes, and it looks like you will be that way for awhile, shut it down. if you're moving, it's fine.
you can spend the money for a RID, or save the money for something more important- like another set of tires, extra lights, etc.
my $.02, YMMV.

5 bars on the RID oil temp guage is equal to aproximately 223 Degrees F. Perhaps there is an aftermarket guage for your bike. An old airhead trick was to buy the VDO oil temp guage and run the sensor line to the bottom of the oil pan bolt. They even had a round washer which went on to the oil pan drain plug itself. I can't say how accurate they were though. Perhaps you could buy a used RID from the folks at Beemer Boneyard.
