Today when I started the bike up there was a wooshing metallic noise, it only lasts a couple of seconds. I don't know how else to describe it. Any idea's?
cheers
CB.

Typically you hear a metallic rattling sound from the left side cam chain tensioner, which lasts a few seconds. I'm not sure about what you are describing. Make the sound for us again....

It's similar to the sound when you try to start your car engine when it is already running, although not as harsh maybe.

Could be you need to remove, clean & lube your starter.

Mine makes the metallic rattling sound you describe. I guess that is normal.

The cam chain rattles until the tensioner gets oil pressure. It's normal.

BluegrassPicker makes a good point. Here is a link to a good PDF on starter lubrication:

had what appears to be the same or similar sound.
Removed starter, cleaned gunk off the shaft, but didn't disassemble as far as .pdf goes. Sound went away...

I have what seems to be a similar problem on my 05 R1200RT.. What is the downside to not performing the procedure.. The squeal doesn't really bother me...
