I'm serious about removing that huge piece of exhaust and cat that came with my'96 gs. I'm not looking for performance gains. I would just like something that won't continue to add so much unnecessary heat to the gearbox and weigh half as much. This is for a high-mount.
Just curious about experiences from those that have performed this little mod and what brands you like....thanks matthew

I have a Remus system on my '95 GS. Dig it. A bit louder than stock, but not annoyingly so. Low mount though. Eliminates the cat but keeps the O2 sensor. Easy to install, too.

Working on that now myself. :dance
1100RS header, canister from 1150GS.
I'm 95% certain the connector pipe from 2 Brothers will mate up and has the O2 bung. I'll get it and modify if need be. :dunno
I'll have about $285 dollars in it and will lose the weight/heat of the cat and should have a deeper growl. :thumb

Staintune is quiet and gives a reduction in weight. I have a remus, my son has the staintune. The noise is not worth it on all the pipes but staintune. My recomendation (FWIW) is leave it STOCK! :bikes

"Noise" has relative definitions.
I live on a quiet street and park my bike outdoors year-round. Nobody has ever said anything about my comings or goings - and my kid is a light sleeper. I always leave for work before 0700 and arriving home after midnight on weekends is not unusual. No complaints.
The Remus system I've got doesn't burble like a stock BMW rig, but you can easily talk over it at normal conversational levels.

My Harley buddy with his Straight Shots says the same thing. He's the guy who we make ride in the rear!
I have a LT, whisper quiet!:clap I had had a '95 with stock system. :clap I had a '00 with a Staintune with Staintune cat eliminator. :clap (bought the bike so equipped). Have a 04 ADV with Remus Ti can with a Remus cat eliminator, with the baffle out :banghead , with the baffle in it is tolerable (bought the bike so equipped). I guess if short distances are the main useage of the bike it is no big thing, but for touring the noise will be a source of irritation. You don't really feel the weight difference, and the performance is not strikingly affected, so unless you really want to just make more noise, based upon my pretty mixed experience, save the money for something that will give a bigger bang for the buck.:bikes

+100. Staintune isn't quite stock but is a good compromise and a real weight saver. My bike has it and I am very satisfied with the tone and very quiet sound.

Thanks to those that have commented. I'm actually considering just cutting-out the cat and replacing it...keeping the muffler. All I'm really interested in is reducing heat to the gearbox and a bit of weight reduction. Keep up the thoughts!

These pop up on occasion (ebay, etc). The staintune resonator box muffles the exhaust gasses and slows the flow. A straight header to the can is going to be LOUD!
