R1100rs 94 I have had this bike for one year and I love it. At this time I have 3 problems. I have a Haynes repair manual but I am not finding much info on these 3 problems.
1. I have never been able to get the hazard switch to function. Do you just replace the switch or is it a relay problem? All of the turn signal lights function.
2. This problem started after getting stuck out in a major down poor. The turn signal cancel switch is a pain in the ass. Sometime it works first try others times it takes repeated pushing of the button. I have even accidently hit the kill switch while trying to apply more presser on the turn signal cancel button. Do you have to take the switch apart and clean contacts or is there a spray that will help?
3. This one just happened last week on the way into work. The odometer and speedometer stopped working. Is there anything I can check, or do I need to take this problem to the shop?

Hi Spacedog.
Not sure about #1. The 4 ways are tied in to the ignition so they won't activate unless the key is on.
#2 was the actual switch on my bike. Dirty contacts.
#3 is almost certainly a broken speedo cable.
Let us know how you make out.

You could get a voltmeter and troubleshoot it.

Thanks for the info Mike. I will clean the contacts and check the cable.

Hey spacedog. I also have a 94 RS. Mine has just recently started the turnsignal canceling problem too. I also have a problem with the front brake switch sticking in the on position. A little spray lube fixed the problem for me. My emergency flashers won't work on my bike unless the fork lock is engaged.

The turn signal cancel problem is usually a dirty contact problem. All the "flasher" needs is a momentary contact at the cancel switch. I would start by removing the one Phillips head screw and then removing the switch from the bar housing. This allows access to the back of the switch. Without taking anything further apart I would spray a good electrical contect cleaner followed by a squirt of compressed air. Repeat several times.
That usually solves the problem.
Disassembly of the switch to physically abrade the contacts to clean them usually involves small balls and little springs flying about - so if you choose to do it - do it inside a fairly large transparent plastic bag. This allows you to see what you are doing but at the same time contain the flying parts you most likely will encounter.

I'm with what Paul says. My 94 R1100RS now has over 138K on it with no problems from the controls on the handlebar. Dirty contacts would be my first guess. I have never had any problem with the cancel function of my controls. But then again, I spray contact cleaner and some sort of lube into the control modules on the handlebar at least once a riding season.
On my bike, the contacts/wire connection on the back of the flashers switch failed. I re-soldered that and have had no problems since.

My flashers stopped working once when I stopped to help a tortoise cross the road (yes, I used to be a boy scout). When I got home, I flicked it on it a bunch of times, and it finally came on. I took the dash apart (the switch is on the left dash on the '98 RS) and sprayed the contacts with cleaner, and haven't had a problem since. I now periodically exercise the switch just to be sure it will work when I need it.

I messed with my emergency flashers yesterday and got them to work correctly. The switch apperantly just needed some excercise as the emergency flashers now work whenever the switch is used...not just with the forks locked. I guess I must have dislodged some corrosion in the process. Time to clean all the switches and connections again.
