I posted a similar question last week. My 2005 r1200gs has had two main seals go bad in less than 20,000 miles. The first one went bad at 15,000 mile and the one relpace under warranty went out at 19,000 miles. I call the main seal the seal that exits the rear of the engine and goes to the clutch.
A fellow 2005 r1200gs riders and I noticed an unusual noise coming from the right side of the motor as you sit on the bike. We used a stethoscope to listen to the right side of the engine about 3 inches in from where the heads bolt on to the cases. It is making a "clacking" sound. We do not hear the same noise on my friends r1200gs.
Has anyone heard of any problems with the bearings or any other internal parts going bad that could be affecting my main seals. It the bearing are bad could that cause my shaft to be not running true and causing my main seal to keep going bad.
Thanks for any input. My bike is at the dealer being looked at.
Thanks Randy

The correct term is "Rear Main Seal".
If I understand your description correctly, the clacking sound you hear is your cam chain. Nope, there's no way it can be related to an RMS failure. Mine would clack too ('05 GS with 21K) if I put a stethoscope on it! Since it's at the dealer, you can ask his advice on this particular noise but I caution you not to try to link it to your RMS failure.
As we told you in the other thread you started, it sounds very much like a botched install. One other thought regarding RMS problems is crankcase pressurization due to a clogged breather. Boxer engines experience large changes in crankcase pressure as both pistons move outward, and inward, in unison, changing crankcase volume substantially.

Soffiler, thanks for your reply. I just notice oil leaking again from where the transmission/clutch housing joins the rear of the engine. Based on past experience, I have another engine output or transmission input seal going bad. You suggested that the seal were probably installed incorrectly, maybe.
I am on my forth engine output seal and third transmission input seal and now I have new leak from the same location, which means another seal failure.
It is hard to believe that I have had 7 seals installed incorrectly. Something is not right with my bike any suggestions.
Thanks for your help.

I have heard of issues with a burr on the shaft. Maybe it's time to talk to your dealer about replacig the entire shaft.

I'd think long and hard about finding another dealer. Seven seals in the same general area should have flagged this to the service mangler long ago and resulted in finding the cause. Could be crankshaft endplay but I doubt it. More likely a burr or scratch on one of the shafts. In any case, while it is apart is a very good time to take a close look at all the possible causes. Much easier than going through it all again later on.
