Returning from lunch today, my '95 1100GS's speedo quit functioning. Anyone have experience w/this? Are there any simple things to check first? Thanks, MG.

Is your odometer is working? If not, you might have a bad cable or bad drive gear instead of a bad speedo.
Pull the cable from the left front wheel drive gear and also from the speedo and see if both ends turn together when you rotate it. If the cable is good check your drive gear, you need to remove you front wheel/tire to do this. (cheaper than a speedo if that is what it is).
If your odomoter is working you probably have a larger problem

Check at the front hub, where the cable screws into the hub and at the speedo to make sure they are both screwed in.
If they are, your cable has probably broken. You can check the cable by pulling it off and see if it spins easily in the sheathing (making sure it's turning on the opposite end as well and not just on one end). If it's still intact and spins freely you may have an issue with the hub or the speedo itself.
My bet would be the cable's broken though. Mine broke once. Easy to change.
Make sure to document the mileage you rode without the speedo working so you don't mislead someone about the mileage if you ever sell it. :laugh :stick

Thanks for the replies. The speedo, odometer and trip meter are all non-functioning. I'll take the cable off and see if that is the problem(what I meant by "something simple") and post a follow-up. MG.

I just had the same problem. Turned out the cable dried up/gummed up and the drive unit on the wheel went out. I replaced both speedo drive and cable, all works well now.
