I currently own an R1150RT but I am shopping for a new bike. I have been looking at for a GS, but a R12RT has caught my eye. My question is this: how easy is it to remove the plastic to allow for valve adjustements and throttle body syncing. With the R1150RT is was a real PIA. Is the R12RT any better?

Thanks,
Bob

I do my own maintenance on an '07 R1200RT, but can't speak to the R1150RT.

I find it very simple to remove the tupperware needed to perform routine valve, throttle-body, air-box, and transmission maintenance. It's a very straight-forward task.

At most, it takes me about 10 minutes to remove it, and another 10 minutes to install it. And, I'm taking my own sweet time to do this -- plus I have accessory valve cover guards with which to deal.

On the 1150 you had to take off the entire side fairing which involved about 15 screws. Then you had to jiggle and manuever the whole big thing until it came free. From the pictures, it looks like on the R12RT you can just remove the lower half of the fairing. Is that right?

You first have to remove the outer fairings on each side. Next, you remove the glove box lid, then the tank bag rack. After this you can remove the inner fairings.
There is a total of about 23 screws. Also, both seats have to come off before everything else. You are looking at about the same amount of time as removing the one-piece fairings on an 1150RT. I find the job slightly easier on the 1200RT.
