I have a 2005 r1200gs with around 19,000 miles on it. I had the main seal and the clutch replaced at 15,000 miles under warranty. Now 4,000 miles later I have the bike in the shop for the same problem. The bike is now out of warranty. Has this been an on going problem with other r1200gs. Would like to hear comments. My thoughts are that the main seal should not go bad at 15,000 miles to begins with and for sure not go bad again after just 4,000 more miles. Thanks

Your bike is actually a "Hexhead" and there's a tech forum specifically for them.

I personally try to keep my ear to the ground for pattern-type failures and RMS has not been one of them to-date. Repair work carries a warranty of its own, but I cannot recall the details. One year? Furthermore, if the bike is routinely serviced by a BMW dealership, you have at least SOME hope for sympathetic treatment outside the warranty period - it says so right in the owner's manual.

I have a 2005 r1200gs with 19,000 miles on it. I had a main seal failure at 15,000miles and the dealer replace the seal and clutch under warranty. Now 4,000 miles later I have the bike in the shop for the same problem, but am out of warranty. Have any other r1200gs riders had the same problem with the main seal and had to have it replaced more than once?

Ask the dealer why the new seal isn't subject to the typical one year warranty on it.

Most dealers will go to bat for you or kick in a replacement themselves and fight with NA later. Most dealers warranty their parts for a year. If your's does try to stiff you, you should raise holy heck with the regional NA representative. If no results, post here and on other sites and raise hell with NA and the dealer.

Yes, other GT owners have had failures, but I can't think of anyone having one this close to the first one. 4k seems like an installation fault, not a part fault, but what do I know, when the supreme ultimate race in Stutgardt caint figger it out!

My BMW dealer has had a two year work garranty and I think its standard throughout BMW now:). Its been a year or more since I learned this at my dealer, as it was one year indeed before. If your dealer has not stood up for this, he is letting you down! Bring it to his attention. Randy:thumb

BMW has had a 2 year warranty on parts - and service - for several years now. Tell the dealer you expect the seal to be covered under that warranty.

The dealer should cover this at no charge. If they replaced the seal only 4000 miles ago and now it's leaking, the mechanic failed to properly set the seal. The dealer should eat the total cost of repair.
