After cleaning and better familiarization of my "new" '85 K 100 RS, I have discovered that the shock on the bike is a "WORKS" Performance shock. It has an upper preload adjustment of various notches (I think 3) and it is also connected to an air valve system.

Does any one know anything about this unit?

It bottoms out just a bit.

Thanks.

You can find out about their shocks here:

http://www.worksperformance.com

They are sold configured for the purchaser's expected riding weight and style. They can be rebuilt and reconfigured by sending it back to them, so you can get the shock set up for your needs.

The adjuster isn't really a "preload" adjuster. It configures where their dual rate springs cross over between stiff and soft.

The spring sag can be changed on the shock, if you have a way to compress the spring. The upper mount is held in place with a snap-ring in grooves in the shock body. If you press the spring retainer down - you can move the snap-ring up or down to decrease or increase preload (aka - adjust the "sag").

The air assembly isn't air - it's a nitrogen container - with nitrogen at about 150PSI in it. It's used to pressurize the shock (gas over oil.) It requires a special fill nozzle connection to recharge if it's lost it's charge. Many dirt bike shops will have the fill setup (with a small tank of nitrogen.)
