The manual for my 83 R100RT, says that the windshield can be adjusted by loosening the 2 knobs (shows photo) on the right & left side of the cockpit dash.

I did this as per the manual. yet the windshield will not budge. I applied force just short of breaking (which I usually do) something; yet the windshield will not move up nor down...Won't move at all!!!

Are there some magical words or mystical trick's involved in this procedure???:dunno

There were 2 different systems to adjust the windshield on the early RTs. If you have the 2 knobs, then yes, you should be able to loosen them off and adjust by just pushing or pulling on the windshield. Sometimes the metal has not been moved in a very long time and will rust or stick due to some grime getting in between the 2 pieces. Take the knobs right off and then carefully take a flat screwdriver and gently pry the 2 pieces of metal apart just a little bit to break them apart. Not too much or you may bend them. Once you have them so that you can move the windshield I would pry them apart just enough to get a little light grease in there. I use a spray lithium grease marketed under the name of LPS. ad the little spray can for about 10 years, so don't know if it is still available. That will make them slide a whole lot easier.

Of course, once you have the windshield adjusted to where you like it, you will probably never move it again.

can not say if this is your fix, but a friend had the same problem and it had sat so long without being adjusted that the two plates ( at the knob) were frozen together
one plate bolts to the fairing, the other to the windsheld.
we took the plates apart,( did not unboolt from the fairing) cleaned them , and put back together, worked fine
the only other thing I can think of , is that at one point someone replaced the pivot at the front, under the gasket, with bolts. if so, the windsheld will not pivot.
they dont go up much, they just pivot, changing the angle

Actually, the main pivot point is at the bottom centre of the windshield. Small piece of metal that is called the "clamping plate". It is actually bolted thru the fron of the windshield thru the fairing. the bolts have shoulders on them so that you cannot over tighten them. It is an actual pivot point. I have seen lot of these replaced with a thin piece of metal and full length bolts that people have tightened right up. Usually causing either stress crack at the holes or not allowing the windshield to pivot. If yours is the incorrect one, it is well worth spending the $20 for a replacement one. You can get them at Max's BMW or many other dealers. You might want to check out the microfiche for your bike. It shows the mounting of the windshield quite nicely.
