being new to working on monolever bikes (85 RT) there seems to be a bit of wobble in the final drive . I can grab the wheel and see the wobble in the drive/wheel relationship.
by the design I would assume its related to the small taper roller bearing as that looks like it could be a pivot point ( in the final drive)
and the big bearing I can not imagine it giving out for a long time
when replacing the smaller "pivot" bearing do you need to mess with preload or is that only with the bigger one

On newer, larger bikes, that big bearing is famous for failing. Only dis-assembly and inspection will tell for sure.

If you grab the wheel and try moving it side to side, it should not move. You don't say how many miles are on the bike. The final drive on my 88 R100 RT needed to be rebuilt about 18 months ago. When I got the bike at 88k miles, there was a slight side to side movement, which became worse over time. I had my final drive rebuilt by a good airhead mechanic who re-shimmed the drive. I was expecting to have replace the bearings, which can be expensive. From what I've gathered, it's common to have to re-shim these units.
It sounds like you need to have the final drive rebuilt. It's near the end of riding season, so I would wait and do it as a winter project. Unless of course, the wobble is too bad. Mine only showed up when I braked hard.

thanks
this one does have a wobble when you grab it by hand
but it is noticible on acceleration, not braking
yep , winter project
