There are numerous threads in here about speedometer/odometer issues. People are taking these MotoMeters apart over and over again trying to fix. Or sending to Palo Alto for fix at $300+ a crack. Of course, they have to be sent out, as (at least around here) local speedo shops refuse to work on them.
Fluttering needles, “lazy” trip/odometers, nonresettable tripmeters seem routine with these. I have encountered a number of Airheads who do not even bother to repair theirs any more – they have literally given up on Motometer. This is a potentially costly approach, because mobile tax collectors- oops! - I mean “public safety officers”, are sure to become more active with the economic downturn.
Quite frankly, these are the worst instruments in terms of reliability, out of all the vehicles I have owned. This is certainly not in keeping with the otherwise trustworthy character of these bikes. Aside from fancy GPS speedos (not in keeping with Airhead simplicity IMHO), what is out there which is not Motometer, but will work with these? I would like to have speedo/odos which are worthy of these fine machines.
For the purists, I would certainly keep the Motometer in case I decide to sell one of these. It seems to me something else ought to be possible to be put in without doing a butcher job.
Anybody done something like this?
