In June I purchased from a dealer my first BMW, a 2002 1150RT with 37,000 miles. It now has 39,000 miles.
Yesterday all was fine but today after I got home from work my front wheel made a scrapping type noise while I backed it into the garage. I turned the bike off, put it on the center stand and spun the front wheel. It spun freely but you could hear a scrapping noise as it spun. Any ideas how serious this is? Also, what can I expect to pay for new front brakes at a BMW dealer? Thanks.

If U think U have brake problems with the scrapping noise, indicates wore out pads. U should be able to see some deterioration on the rotor, where the metal backing of the pad is making contact. If U have caught it in time maybe U can get by with a set of new pads. Rotors are pretty privey. While your at it check the pads for the other 2 brake rotors. Pad replacement cheap, rotor replacement expensive.

some slight noise from drag is normal. especially backwards. Everyone I've ridden does it. (20 or so)

no idea on what OEM pads cost to replace- i never go OEM with brakes. Just installed EBC HHs on the fronts. one pad was "getting down there"- other 3 were tolerable. replaced all pads- never do just one. okay to do front or rear only, but ALWAYS do all at either end. i paid about $32/set for the EBCs from CycleGear.com
if your bike has 37K on the original pads, it is likely that they're due for replacement- yank the wheel, and get a good look at 'em. incredibly easy DIY job.

edit: doh! of course, no need to pull wheel to pull calipers.
(in my best Emily Latella..."nevermind")

My 2000 R1100RT does the same thing. I suspect it has something to do with the floating disks. They can shift a little and when the breaks are not applied can set up a squeal or vibration.

Re noise: All the bikes I've owned (3) made some noise when the wheel was spun from brake slight drag/interference.

Re pads: Just ordered a new set from beemerboneyard.com. Haven't got 'em yet, but they were way cheaper than OEM.

Re inspection: You don't have to pull the wheel. The calipers are easy to remove, although the clearance is tight. Be patient and don't force them and they'll come off/go back just fine. Some people put a piece of "duck" tape over the wheel to prevent dings. I just try to be careful.
