This afternoon I was home from work a bit early as my little guy has the flu, and the whiffy needed a break. Anyway, I hear a low flying aircraft and peek outside to see a spray plane flying over the residential neighborhood where I reside. As spray planes do, he was swooping in low (150 ft.) and making alternating 180 degree turns at the end of each run as he systematically made his way from north to south.
I could not see any vapor or mist coming out of the spray plumbing beneath the plane. Moreover, I know of no large agricultural fields nearby that would need spraying. I've been here 9 years and this is a first. I kinda wonder what the heck the plane was up to?:dunno

Spraying for misquitos?
Seems a little late that far north.
Human population control/culling? Suddenly our energy problems are solved with 20% less poeple on the earth.
I'd put on my aluminum foil hat just in case.
Try to get the tail numbers and call the sheriff or the FAA

a few years ago we had quite a problem with several varieties gypsy moths, in DC and surrounding area but not sure when they molt. I know that some bugs are most susceptible to spraying in the fall. I'd call your local agricultural extension office and inquire. Or if you live in a HOA controlled hood call them or the county office.

Possibly he was shooting aerial photographs, shooting flight lines north to south.
Pretty low altitude but that would be my bet.

Maybe it was a rookie pilot just practicing.
In any case, you may be interested in reading "Silent Spring" by Rachel Carson. It is from the 60s but still relevant. Google it.

That would definitely freak me out. My goodness a crop duster over a residential area? That brings thoughts of some kind of terrorist attack.
I don't want to sound hysterical by any means but, there were plans like that confiscated by U.S. Troops from Taliban and Al Queda fighters. They had target cities within the U.S. along with locations of crop dusting aircraft.
That is the kind of stuff that scares me. There is still easy access for the bad guy's in our country to get hold of private aircraft.

All you need to know to make your own tin foil hat. You know "they" might have made the commerical ones, you can't trust them. But wait a minute, what if "they" authored this website. Better get back in your lead line bomb shelter.

Should you choose to read the book, follow this up with the National Academy of Science's 1996 report for up-to-date information on the premise which lead to writing that book; or you could choose to read the NAS report first.

It was probably just the local government, or state spraying for some type of insect control. That being said. It would freak me out some if I were unaware of the spraying. I'm more concerned with what they are spraying. Earlier in the year, "they" were going to spray for some type of moth (if I remember correctlyl) in N. California, but the pesticide was some what controversial. Although the government contended the pesticide was safe, they decided not to spray after numerous people spoke out about the side effects. In any case, if you see plane like that spraying, I would stay indoors for a while.

Back in the "good old days" of my mis-spent youth the crop dusters would hire a high school kid to hold a long stick with a flag at the end of the field. The duster would make his pass, and then the kid was supposed to walk a certain number of rows across the end of the field so the pilot could aim at him for the next pass. For some reason they don't do that any more. The kid I knew who had that job always was a little goofy - but he is now retired and still in seemingly good health. Makes you wonder though.
I also still remember from when I was a kid, the City would send a truck driving through the neighborhood fogging with DDT for mosquitos. All the kids (me included) would hop on our bikes and closely follow the truck - riding in the cloud. In hindsight it seems a bit stupid but at the time neither the kids nor our parents thought much about it - assuming the parents weren't blind and saw us doing it.

Rule of thumb: When engaging prop driven or rotary aircraft with small arms fire you should lead the aircraft by half a football field; jet aircraft lead by an entire football field. :D

While attending college I would go sky diving at a crop duster's airfield in Panhandle, Texas. JW Stamps was a crop duster and liked to fly sky divers in his Cessna 185. JW would use a car to mark his passes across the fields. It worked well until he hit the car with the wheels of his AG Wagon; he survived. I doubt your goofy buddy with the flag would have made it working for JW.

He may have been simply practicing or testing something on a dry run.:dunno It's not like you fill the thing up with pesticides and give it your best shot at the fields. Gotta learn somewhere. Ya think?

At 3,800 FPS, I suspect not. Probably would not take down a crop duster, however. (Model 700 VLS in my safe)

Yeah, seems to me IUP spanked the Red raiders a few times. I guess you could always console yourself with some Gardners candies and a trip to Bland's park.

I'm beginning to think all of this generation did this, and that would explain alot! This used to be a hallowed event in the summer; The parents and my prudish sister would be racing around the house shutting up all the windows of the house before the truck got there, meanwhile every boy worth his salt was tailing this truck on it's route in and around our small town in eastern Colorado. What fun!
