I just came in from the garage where I have been staring at my 1978 R100/7. Earlier today I removed the luggage and associated racks and the RT fairing that have been installed for the last two years ago. The bike essentially looks like it did the day it came home in 1979, and it is beautiful!
I have had the same R100/7 for 29 years. Over that time I’ve added and removed, in no particular order, a Plexifairing windshield, Krauser bags, Luftmeister fairing, Plexistar windshield, Wixom bags, crash bars/highway bars, BMW bags, RT fairing, ‘S’ fairing, Sputnik sidecar, Corbin seat, a modified /7 seat, Brown sidestand, RT handlebars, S handlebars, RS handlebars, an ‘aftermarket’ handlebar, a Bench Mark Works ‘easy clutch’ (nice!), Wixom top box, Krauser top box, an ebay top box, an ebay luggage rack, and some other stuff I’m forgetting.
This isn’t the first time I’ve returned the bike to its original condition…I have done this dozens of times. Please stop me before I modify again!!!

Why would we, long as your having fun, that is what its all about. So what's the mileage on it? My 78 R100/7 has around 160K is going under the knife this winter for a complete top end (well hopefully that is, once I recover from the work done on the 03 LT, damn those things are expensive to maintain!) Ha Ha..

Been there done that to my 74 R90. Windjammer, several aftermarket seats, a couple of different sidestands, a couple of different krauser sets, 3 or 4 different rear racks, Several different universal windshields, Plain no shield, Wixsom bags, soft luggage, a couple of instrument clusters, endless rebuilds of various sub components. Several different front fenders, big and small tanks. Several different rear trunks and top cases. Bike completely dissasembled and put back together once and is now been taken a part for the 2nd time for a restomod rebuild. 3 or 4 different exhaust systems. In between bike has been ridden probably 200,000 miles. Alot more that I can't think of off the top of my head. I probably have that much more stuff in my shop to add or subtract to the bike at some future date to keep the craziness going. My personal suggestion is don't stop. :thumb PS have been doing this, to this bike since '88. Ain't stopping now.

Rocketman....I've got about 110K on the /7. My other ride is an '84 Venture Royale. The change of pace between the /7 and the Venture is entertaining, but I find myself taking the /7 for whatever ride I'm doing 90% of the time. You've got a similar 'change of pace' set of bikes with the /7 and the LT. Just curious, which gets the most use?

Well when I first got the LT I rode it almost exclusively for the first 9 months ( I got it in Nov. and it handled the heated gear better), then started riding the airhead again for more than just afternoon rides, and fell in love with it all over again. Now its pretty much a toss up, if I really have to make some miles, then its the LT, for weekend rides to rallys within a days ride, the airhead (she gets lots more looks!). For rides that might involve some really narrow back roads that I haven't ridden and may turn to dirt or just end, the airhead since I know I can always get it out of any jamb. For a nice super comfy ride, or for the weather protection, I take the LT.
So really it depends on the ride, I love 'em both for what they do best. How's that for a non-committal response? Should I run for some office? :lol

I've actually done very little to 78 since I got it in 99, jammer and krawser bags went on when I picked it, taller bars and better suspension parts, and a I've added a few farkles for powering my XM and GPS and an extra light.
My 73 R60/5 got more, 2-into-1 black megaphone exhaust, S bar and S fairing, air shocks on the rear, progressives on the front, and other stuff to beef up handling. then it pretty much stayed the same, just as my 78 has. But I was going for a particular look with each and once done that was it, I just road the piss outta 'em!

Everything I do to my BMWs is in the pursuit of an as-close-to-stock bike that I can get for my money while still being safe.
First thing to go on both of them were the fairings.
...
If I ever find a junker mismatched bike, I'll customize it to my hearts content, though.
