I live 3 1/2 and 2 1/2 hours from the BMW dealers so I must do most repairs myselfl. Tach and speedo lights do not work. Does anyone know how many light bulbs I must replace? What light bulb do I use?
Can petrcock filter screens be cleaned?
Thanks,

On which of the bikes listed in you sig are you talking about so folks can better respond.
On the /6 and /7 and later I think the gages take two each, (for general pod lighting) but don't know the kind
the /5 took two i believe
yes, petcock screens can be cleaned. some have a tubular screen inside some have a screen where they attach to the tank so they must be removed, don't think you have to remove the pedcock if they have the tubular kind, just the bottom part needs to be removed as I remember.

cant remeber the number
but if you have a volvo dealer near you they can help, with the old ones in hand.
they have the correct wattage
otherwise they are available at a auto parts store but they are a higher watt
I was told not to use the higher wattage but dont know if it really makes a difference, its like 1 watt more
sinve the bikes are so sensitive to power, I used the volvo ones, and they are the original Osram that came out

You can put in LED lights in the Airhead cluster and I think you will be very pleased. Go to autolumination.com and go to instrument cluster section. you will need T5 and 194 LED bulbs. I have seen those bulbs used and I'm going to replace mine as needed. Good luck. Kevin

I got out my friend's Clymer and started on the inst lights. Had tough time with the big rubber plug. It had never been apart before. When it finally came apart the aluminum female connectors didn't do very well. Some came off and others were broken. It appears I am looking at a main wiring harness. In addition to $300 for the part, it will probably be a big job replacing it.
The old adage about remembering I started out to drain the pond when those damn alligators appeared!
BTW, the bulbs were shot.
Capital Cycle had the best price.

Boy, where I live it's further to a Volvo dealer than a BMW motorcycle dealer. :)

I've even managed to acquire the proper bulbs at the local Wally world, and in a variety of colors.

thanks for the link to the LED bulbs
looks like a great idea
for those not familiar, if the gen light goes out ( burns out) it shuts down your electical system, until replaced or bypassed
the website listed above by 20774 goes into great detail about the lights, all the lights on a BMW, and how to fix that generator problem,
great site

Hi, Paul,
I know where you live! It's well over 300 miles to a BMW motorcycle dealer (San Antonio) and less than that to El Paso, where we DO have a Volvo dealer! Of course, every time you look in a mirror, you see the closest competent BMW motorcycle service and the dealer is as close as the phone/computer and the BBT (Big Brown Truck).

Hi Phil - I forgot if I ever knew, that El Paso had a Volvo dealer. I was thinking more like Houston or Ft. Worth/Dallas. Does Volvo make a big pickup truck??? Shows what a desert rat knows anyway - huh?
