Hi all,
I need to remove the rotor from my R90S and dont have a bmw special tool and the VERY nice Rick from Motorrad forgot to include one in my electrical upgrade kit.
I'm thinking let me be nice to Rick and not bother him on this, since he's helped me SO much to understand and do some troubleshooting on my poor old electrical system. I hate to be high maintenance to anyone.
so, that bolt...what's so special about it? Can I buy one at my hardware store? Whats the actual procedure? You might have surmised I'm a newbie at this but anxious to learn. the shop manual just says use the special tool and remove it....I've looked on line for a reference to this question with no success. Is it possible I'm the first person dumb enough to ask it?
Thanks,
Joseph

The tool is basically a short bit of rod. You take the alternator bolt out, put this bit of rod in the hole, then put the bolt back in, turn it a couple times and it pops the rotor off.
You can fabricate one yourself from a strong bit of rod or an old strong bolt. I used a bit of metal rod I had laying around when I lost my original tool, by cutting it to about an inch and a half long.
If you'd like, I can measure it for you. You just need to use something that won't bend or compress and get stuck in the crankshaft nose. I've heard welding rod works.

Joe Cuda of Airhead list fame has an article on this; a number of years ago he made some and sent them out gratis...I carry mine in my tool box.

In a pinch, I made one once by using a bolt of the proper thread and length (about 3" long if memory serves), which had threads all the way up to the head. I ground off the bottom inch or so of threads, freehand, so the result was really sloppy, but the rotor popped off easily enough. Since it worked, I threw it in the tool kit where it happily rode for years. I put a nut on it before grinding, then backed it off to remove the grinding burr.

The BMW tool is part # 83 30 0 401 703, a hard bolt such as described by brickrider but neat looking, and costs $15.07 MSRP from your BMW dealer.

Also, be ready to catch the rotor when it comes loose! It can pop off suddenly and fly a couple of feet as it makes its way toward the ground, or at least mine did the first time I pulled it.
