I am a brand new owner, as in 30 mins, and have a 1984 R100. Dilemma; how to remove the bags? I see the latches on the end that look identical to the top ones, but they are tight and I am terrified of doing some expensive damage. The top latches are easy to open.

Or shall I just continue to exert pressure...?

First thing to check is are they unlocked?
Also, which model latch do you have. Most of the Krauser's have a ltach that looks like an older seatbelt buckle. You should just have to push the button in and they will pop off. May need a little wiggling of the bag to get it loose if it is slightly out of alingment.
If it is the clamp on style of the later BMW bags, then you want to be careful not to break the latch. The locks are a little finicky oon both of them and you have to sometimes play with them to get them to turn the right way. Especially if they have been sitting on the bike for a long time. maybe try a little WD-40 into the locks as well as into the area where they attach to the tang on the bike.
