When I bought my first BMW (a new 88K75s in 1990) I planned on keeping it for ever never needing another bike. BMW did really have as many models and the Kbikes were just really gaining approval. I kept that bike for 8 years, then made a mistake a test road the new K1200RS and had to have it. Then 12 months later a K1200lt came home. I took a strange turn a picked up a mint condition 91K100rs a few months ago.

I sell them after a while. For us, that's typically been 3 or 4 years, but our R11RS has been hanging around here for going on 8 years now.

We have a VFR too, but I don't think that bike's ever going to leave. I really love riding it.

I've heard that about the VFRs, I 'll have to take one for a ride someday. Only problem is most honda dealers in my area won't let you ride them... :dunno

Count me as used only. BMW s are expensive used and much more new. But, People usually take care of them so why buy new? Brand new models often have bugs so they are an extra risk also. I have bought a used Airhead and Oilhead. They are great bikes, but the oilhead is especially complicated and expensive to repair. My next bike is probally a slightly used Suzuki V strom or Yamaha FJR 1300. I rode both these bikes last week and the performance is excellent and they are an amazing value.

I also love the R1100RS and planned on keeping my 94 forever. Now that it has 75K on it and I keep jumping on my S, the switch back makes the Rs feel so loose and slushy by comparison. For two up riding , and any real long distance though, it's still the more attractive choice. Even after a hard days (physical ) work, the RS is easier to ride a distance, especially on the highway.
But as far a BMW goes, I still feel they have a character to them that makes some of their quicks and nuances worth it.
I still get upset at replacement part prices and I don't expect some to be wearing out either. You know you can now buy a discman or cell phone for the same price as one bearing!
