View Full Version : Driveshaft removable during Pivot bushing install?

This weekend, I'm going to replace the FD pivot bearings on my 04Roadster, 33k miles, with the world-famous RCRG bronze bushings.
I wanted to inspect, clean & lube the front driveshaft splines, as well as the rear, while I'm at it. Can this be done?
My repair CD shows that with the swingarm off, the DS just levers off the output hub with a large screwdriver. I don't want to remove the swingarm, and was wondering if it was possible to extract & re-install the shaft without doing that.
TIA for any input.....

I can only speak from experience with a '96 GS. You should be able to remove the DS w/o swingarm removal but installation will be a bit more tricky. Proper alignment is the biggest problem with the swingarm attached. Assuming your bike is generally the same as mine, as I had a gearbox removal to accomplish hence the removal of the swingarm, hopefully you do not.
I'm going to guess that you will need to remove it. If I'm wrong.. I'm sorry. In that case though, it gives you an opportunity to check the condition of other parts.
I used the Honda moly lube and a toothbrush. Good luck! Matthew

i did those pivot bushing on my R11S (not that tough of a job). you will remove the back half of the DS to do the bushings, but the front half will remain in place. to get the front half of the shaft will require removal of the swingarm.

I have done it a number of times on my 94 R11RS, including when I installed the swingarm bushings. The swingarm stayed in place. It took a bit of tugging to get the DS free of the front spline.
Make certain you note the DS position relative to the rear final drive and tranny output spline, because it has to go back in the same way to minimize vibration. If you get it wrong, you will feel it.
I use a wooden dowel to help support the DS as I veiw in the swingarm to align the splines on the tranny output. Then I use a rolled up rag to "center" the DS at the rear as I align it to the final drive. Once engaged, I pull the rag out before I push the FD in place.

Thanx everybody...
Andy, I wish you had posted this on Fri....your post may have emboldened me, but I chickened out on pulling the shaft.
I have read that the front shaft splines never :whistle have a problem, so I did not bother.
Bushings went in nicely tho, and have eliminated the very small wheel play back there......

Question for the uninformed (ahh, me). What's the name of, and from whom are you folks buying this bushing (the world famous one)?
