Hi All...

Not sure if this is the right place to be asking this question, however, not sure where else to turn. I am looking for a general BMW Customer Support number.

I purchased an '08 R1200GS in March and had put ~5500 miles on it when she left me stranded on the side of the road (commuting to work) early one morning. The problem was the throttle suddenly cut out and then came back several time (as if out of gas...just filled up 25 miles earlier) and then the engine just shut off. That was Aug. 4th. Roadside assistance found a service to tow the bike to the dealer I purchased the bike from, months prior. The dealer has been working on the bike ever since. There have been several setbacks, including me picking it up 3 weeks in (it seemed to be fixed) and only making it 2 miles down the road before having to have it towed back to the shop. The dealer seems to be doing al lthe right things and asking BMW for assistance in diagnosing the problem however, after 5 weeks the error code that has apparently changed several times has come back to the original error. Faulty fuel sensor and/or fuel pump, both of which were replaced already.

I would appreciate any feedback and/or a customer support number that I can call, as my dealer is closed today, I am nowhere near my bike (manual under seat) and I have not had any luck finding it online.

Disheartened In MA!

Very sorry to hear of all the troubles, Chris! I know what it's like to be without a bike during this prime riding season. In '05 I was rear-ended on August 4th and didn't get back on two wheels until Oct 11 that year. In '07 my final drive sprung a leak and it was repaired under warranty but that took about five weeks between early August and mid September mostly due to logistics and shop scheduling.

I cannot find a single customer support telephone number in my '05 GS Rider's Manual. The closest it comes is a comment on p. 105 under the heading Service Worldwide:

Call us if you have any questions about the BMW dealership network. You'll find corresponding telephone numbers in the "Service Kontakt / Service Contact" booklet.

1. I don't recall getting said booklet with my bike
2. I suspect this is nothing more than a dealer locator for people on the road

Not sure exactly where I got this (perhaps right here in one of the forums) but I just uncovered in my telephone contact list a number for BMW North America headquarters in New Jersey: 201-307-4000

if I were you I'd make myself extremely familiar with your state's vehicle lemon law.

BMW customer support No 1800-831-1117
It has been almost a year since I called this number. Hopefully it still works.

Well, after 5 weeks and 5 days...I'm back of the road again. I am still awaiting the documentation that details the exact problem and solution. I will share that information once I have it...but for now the most important part is that the she's back and I am riding. Thanks for the help and the number. 1-800-831-1117 is the correct number to call and they were very nice and assisted the dealer in getting a little more help and advise on solving the problem.

If you want to be able to ride everyday you need more than one BMW motorcycle.

If you want to own just one bike I think you actually get more riding time per year if you ride a Honda or Yamaha. Since neither make a GS type bike for the US you are SOL. I have put over 60K total on two different KLRs, they are ugly and crude, but they get the job done.

They (KLRs) are not the most exciting thing in the world, but the kind of excitement you get from being broke down is not something I want either.

Does that make the boredom you get from riding a KLR exciting because it actually runs?
